ADOPTIONS AND SPAY/NEUTER REPORT *defined as adopting really awesome cats

We are pleased to report that 2018 was pretty *pawesome with adoptions for 2018. This past year, our highlight was finding forever homes for a few of our long-term resident senior cats and adopting over 100 cats through our Adoption Program. Sisters Faith and Hope, Red, Olacai and Paris are now enjoying lounging around in their homes and getting all the love & attention that they deserve. We certainly miss them but very happy that they have a forever home.

Our adoptions just aren't local either. We also had two unique adoptions that landed our kitties residents in other states. Midnight George was transferred to us from a shelter because of his severe medical issue. He needed surgery to repair his ear hematoma. We were able to help Midnight George with his surgery and he recovered just fine. Soon, a family visiting from Texas fell in love with him and decided that he would be a purrfect addition to their family but couldn't take him home until their business travel was over! After many texts and photos were exchanged, Midnight George was still in their hearts. Within a few weeks, Midnight's dream came true. He was adopted and is now a resident of Texas living the life in a classy high-rise apartment.

We would also like to share a story about Tucker. Tucker was young feral kitten living in a colony that was being trapped for TNVR. Tucker was too young and sick to be returned to the field. He suffered from an extremely enlarged belly that resulted from parasite infection. Tucker's belly problem was taken care of and our dedicated volunteers helped Tucker gain confidence to trust humans. Soon, a wonderful lady visiting friends stopped in to shop at our Thrift Store. She met Tucker and fell in love with him. It was a another purrfect match! She wanted to adopt Tucker but lived in Ohio and would be flying back later the next day. She worked vigorously the next few hours making arrangements to fly Tucker back with her. The next morning, she had confirmed that Tucker could fly and was ready to take him.

January 2019 started out on a high note with over 78 cats (and some dogs) going through our low cost Spay/Neuter and TNVR (Trap-Neuter-Vaccinate-Return to Caregiver) Programs. With kitten season on the way, it's a good start to help keep unwanted litters out of our local shelters.

Hello everyone, my name is KiKi and I am the senior cat elected to write this article for this newsletter. As you may know, Paris has been adopted and we are so happy for her. She and her new mom spend all day cuddling on the couch. Some of the other kitties are a bit jealous I must say. For this article we all agreed that we would like to know a little more about the new human leader of Cats Angels. Sherry seems like such a nice girl and we love it when she comes into the adoption center with treats. She is a cat's dream come true.

But the other kitties and I wanted to dig a little deeper. Who is the real Sherry Merritt? Well these feline journalists aren't afraid to ask the probing questions. Here is the interview we conducted with this new human person we have claimed as our own.

Saturday, March 23 10 AM to 3 PM Atlantic Recreation Auditorium Fernandina Beach

Where did you grow up? I grew up in Ocilla, Ga. A very small agriculture town in South Georgia.

Did you have lots of pets as a child? Oh Yes!!!! My rescue career started very early in life. I remember my Dad bringing home orphaned animals from farms he visited. I had the chance to raise orphaned goats, ducks, chickens, pigs, and calves. When I was just 5 years old, my parents took me to the "pound" or animal shelter to pick out my first cat and dog. Those shelter visits never left my heart and mind. I knew that I could help made a difference in their lives!!!

What is your educational background? I earned a Bachelor of Science in Education from the University of Georgia. I also studied abroad in London, England and Christchurch, NZ. My professional experience includes 9.5 years in shelter management with certifications in animal control and emergency sheltering with FEMA.

What's your favorite part of animal rescue? Being able to make a positive difference in an animal's life.

Who is your favorite kitty @ CAI? I love all the kitties individually but KiKi is my favorite. The way she greets me daily with her little meow that secretly tells me to give her a treat. She just melts my heart on a daily basis.

What is your favorite flavor of canned cat food? Hmmmm. Most any Fancy Feast Classic Pate. Well there you have it, the real scoop on a wonderful lady who will be leading us into the future. We hope you enjoy reading the interview as much as we enjoyed putting it together.
