“Girlhood”

Introduction

Documentaries are often said to reveal the truth about an issue, person, or organization, yet many of them are best watched with a critical eye. Girlhood by Liz Gargan follows two teenage girls in a Maryland Detention Center. Both teens have been incarcerated for killing another person.

Purpose:

to watch a non-fiction film and script its content

to make inferences based on two direct quotations

to identify two themes

to critically review the film using several strategies

to write an introduction to an essay that would review the film

to plan one body paragraph, including several sources having used a lateral thinking approach

Background and Cast

Shanae Owens and Megan Jensen are observed for almost three years, starting with their time in the Waxter Juvenile Detention Center, just outside of Baltimore, Maryland. Shanae is 14 and has served two years at Waxter for the murder of her friend, a crime she committed when she as only 12 years old. Megan is 16 and is in Waxter for Assault with a Deadly Weapon.
