Are BeautiControl’s products “all natural” or “organic”?

While we include many natural ingredients in all of our products, we do not market our products as "all-natural". The claim "all natural" is a misnomer, in fact. According to governmental regulations, "all natural" would imply that 100% of the ingredients are from a natural source.

Similarly, the same applies to an "organic" claim. According to FDA regulations, no product can be considered "organic" unless at least 95% of its composition is comprised of organic ingredients. Organic means that no artificial chemicals or fertilizer was used during the growth of these botanically derived ingredients.

These guidelines would disqualify the majority of products on the market today from being considered "organic" or "all natural" . In order to give products a stable shelf life and keep them free from bacteria, we have to include a number of preservatives and stabilizers in our formulas. In fact, the only truly "organic" or "all natural" cosmetic products would need to be refrigerated at all times in order to keep them safe for use.

That being said, we do include a great number of organic/natural ingredients in our products, for their beneficial properties. Many of them don't appear to be "organic" on the ingredient listing because we use their chemical compound description in compliance with FDA regulations.

Please find a list of those ingredients included below:

All the Botanical and Marine Extracts and Essential Oils---Green Tea, Aloe Vera, Lemon, Orange, Oat, Calendula, Chamomile, Birch, Basil, Horse Chestnut, Witch Hazel, Carrots, Coneflower, Bilberry, Blue Berry, Ginseng, Burdock, Peony, Sea Buckthorn, Tomato, Basil, Licorice, Willow Herb, Willow Bark, Algae, Rose, Jasmine, Rosemary, Peppermint, and Many, Many More...

All the Butters ---Olive, Shea, Mango,Jojoba Esters (Butters)

All the Vegetable Oils---Safflower Oil, Coconut, Sesame, Soybean, Avocado, Macadamia, Canola, Almond, Jojoba, Kuiki Nut Oil, Meadowfoam Seed, Etc.,

Some of the Waxes---Carnauba, Candelilla,

Some of the Surfactants (as Emulsifiers or Cleansing Agents)---Decyl Glucoside, Peg-120 Methyl Glucose Dioleate, Methyl Gluceth-20, Methyl Glucose Sesquistearate, Etc.

Exfoliating Agents---Almond Meal, Jojoba Ester (Beads), Grape Seeds, etc.

Some of the Non-Oil Emollients---Peg-7 Glyceryl Cocoate, Glycereth-7

Why does BeautiControl no longer market products as “cool and warm”?

In the 80’s, when BeautiControl was established, we were primarily considered a “color cosmetic” company. In fact, 80% of the products that we sold were color cosmetics vs. skin care products. During this time, it was important that BeautiControl had a point of difference in the color cosmetic market to identify it against the product offerings of other companies such as Merle Norman, Mary Kay, Estee Lauder, etc. Because of this, Color Analysis was developed and all of our color products were divided into color seasons. While this was a new and revolutionary marketing strategy at the time, by the mid 90’s – when skin care sales became 80% of our company sales – women were looking for less complicated ways of choosing and selling color cosmetics.

Our strategy in creating the new color palettes is to offer greater freedom of choice for the consumer by allowing her to choose the shades that she wants to wear. In doing this, we will be able to increase our “warm” color offerings, not limit them. Because less than 15% of the population is “warm”, it was difficult to expand our “warm” product offerings since the sales performance of those shades were very limited. Now, without the “cool and warm” labels, we will be able to offer shades that are more marketable to all skin tones and more competitive in the marketplace

Above all, our mission is to expand our product offerings to our consumers…not to limit them. Also, we strive to keep this business easy and uncomplicated. Feel free to let us know if you need assistance choosing shades that would be considered more “warm”.

How does BeautiControl compare to Arbonne?

The beauty of this exciting industry is that there is room for every company to co-exist, offering individualized products to address individual consumer needs. As today’s consumer becomes for exposed to the benefits and necessity of cosmetics, their expectations become more and more varied. As a result, a “one size fits all” product line is a thing of the past.

BeautiControl's product positioning is to develop very high tech products that compete with today's serious skin repair market. BeautiControl’s product positioning is “Science as Nature Intended”, meaning that we use extensive botanically derived ingredients in our formulations in addition to the latest ingredients that technology allows for the prevention and repair of skin damage.

Arbonne is a company that has good products that appeal to a certain type of consumer. Arbonne has chosen to take a conservative, "botanically based" product positioning that is very safe and conservative.

There are several types of consumers in today's world - There are those that do not want change, there are those that want to cosmetics that are derived from natural or organic sources, and there are those that want the latest that science and technology has to offer in order to achieve more aggressive anti-aging benefits.

I feel that Arbonne has a good product that directly addresses the needs of their target market.

Below are some comparison claims between Arbonne and BeautiControl. Every person has different expectations of their skin care products. It is important to find the product line that best represents what the consumer is looking for in skin care treatments. The success of a product line is based on its ability to address the concerns of the client.

All Natural :

• Neither BeautiControl or Arbonne make “all natural” or “organic” claims regarding products. While we include many natural ingredients in all of our products, we do not market our products as "all-natural". The claim "all natural" is a misnomer, in fact. According to governmental regulations, "all natural" would imply that 100% of the ingredients are from a natural source.

Botanically based:

• Both BeautiControl and Arbonne use an extensive and similar amount of botanically derived ingredients. “botanical based” is really more of a marketing term that is relative only to the positioning of the product and it’s ability to target a particular consumer.

PH Correct:

• All reputable companies will formulate a product regimen to maintain the correct pH balance of the skin. This is the reason that it is recommended to use a complete regimen of products from the same company to ensure that the products are designed to work together.

Dermatologist, Sensitivity and Allergy Tested (hypoallergenic):

• Both Arbonne and BeautiControl test product for this claim. This is a standard claim to ensure the safety of a product.

No Animal Testing:

• Neither BeautiControl or Arbonne test products on animals.

• BeautiControl does use Emu oil on a limited basis for several of our body care formulations. Emu oil is purchased as a by products of the meat packing industry. No animals are killed or harmed for the sole purpose of their oils.

Mineral Oil, Synthetic fragrances or dyes:

• Arbonne claims not to use mineral oil, synthetic fragrances or dyes in their formulations. BeautiControl does not make this claim. There are instances where we use synthetic fragrance ingredients to cover raw materials in the formulation that might posses a mal odor in the formulation. The term “fragrance” implies that multiple ingredients were used to create the scent of the product. Many of those ingredients are natural, while some might be chemically manufactured.

• BeautiControl uses mineral oil in product designed to target very dry skin conditions, and offers oil-free options for our consumers who are looking for oil-free product option. We use a pharmaceutical grade of mineral oil – the same grade that is used in prescriptions for extreme dry skin conditions. While there are alternate oils, (many of which we use), there are none that have been proven to be more effective for those suffering from extremely dry skin symptoms.

• BeautiControl only uses colorants and ingredients that are approved for cosmetic use. These ingredients are proven to be safe and effective

How do I use the Brown Sugar Bronzer to achieve the best results?

The Brown Sugar Bronzer should be applied directly to clean skin that is free of any other products.  It should dry fairly quickly, although it does take some time for the product to dry completely  I would not recommend this product if you are going to be out in the heat and humidity or while wearing white clothing.  This is a body make-up, this is not a self tanner.  You might want to apply a light layer of loose powder over the bronzer to make it more transfer resistant. This product is intended to offer shine and color to the skin. It should not be considered a skin stain.

What is the best product to use for “bags” under the eyes?

We have two different formulas that address "bags" under the eyes.  "Bags" are caused by two separate issues - fluid retention and lack of firmness.

Eye X Cel, is a moisturizing eye cream that is meant to offer skin moisturization, and antioxidant protection.  While it has green tea to help with fluide retention, as well as squalene, algea extrrast, and locust bean extract to aid in skin firmness, the main purpose is not to address "bags".

The product that I feel would best suit your concerns is the Tight Eyed.  Tight Eyed contains Methylsilanol Carboxymethol Theophylline ( a very aggerssive topical diuretic) and green tea extract (a mild topical diuretic to help reduce puffiness) as well as many other ingredients to aid is tightening the skin's tissue.

What are the differences between BeautiControl’s eye products?

We know that the eyes are one of the first places to show the signs of aging. For this reason, we offer multiple solutions to address specific needs associated with problems around the eye area.

First, it is important to know that all eye treatment products are formulated to be used under and around the eye area, right below the brow bone and in the “crows feet” areas. Eye treatment products are not intended for use on the eye lids. Using products on the eye lids can result in sensitivity for both the delicate skin tissue on the lid as well as the eye itself.

When choosing an eye product, it is important to understand the function of each of our eye products:

Eye X Cel - This is BeautiControl’s basic maintainence eye cream.  It is very effective for moisturizing the eye area, protecting against free radical damage, firming the skin tissue, decreasing dark circles and puffiness.  It can be used alone for someone with little or no signs of aging, or can be teamed with another repair eye product such as Regeneration Gold eye cream, or Platinum eye serum to supplement the moisture.

Key Benefits:

• Firms with Soy & Locust Bean Gum

• Moisturizes & nourishes with emollients/& Vitamins E & panthenol

• Protects the skin with COQ10, Algae Extract, Green Tea & Licorice Extracts

• Brightens the skin with light diffusing ingredients that create the

effect of “SOFT FOCUS LIGHTING”

• If you don’t have fine lines or wrinkles and no damage to repair,

Eye X-Cel is the eye cream for you.

• Usually used by those in their teens up into their late 20’s.

Regeneration Gold Eye Repair cream - This eye cream is designed to help repair the moderate signs of aging by repairing the lines and wrinkles with a complex of both AHA and BHA's, and help to alleviate hyperpigmentation around the eyes.  This is not extremely moisturizing, so you might find it necessary to team it with Eye X Cel for additional moisture.

Key Benefits:

• Repairs, Moisturizes, Lightens, Firms

• Repairs with aha’s that exfoliate dead surface cells reducing the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles

• Lightens dark circles and sun damage with Bearberry Extract & aha’s

• Firms by containing Sophora Japonica Extract & Soy

• Soothes the fragile skin with Algae Extract

• Emollients surge moisture into the skin

• If you are in your late 20’s or early 30’s and are seeing fine lines and wrinkles sometimes referred to as “crow’s feet” appearing this is a good eye cream for you.

Regeneration Platinum Eye Repair serum - is a light-weight eye serum designed to help repair the more advanced signs of aging such as lines, wrinkles, hyperpigmentation, skin tone dulling, lack of firmness, etc.  It also has a very advanced antioxidant complex that helps to offer protection from future damage.  This is our most advanced eye repair product.  This is not extremely moisturizing, so you might find it necessary to team it with Eye X Cel for additional moisture.

Key Benefits:

• Tightens and firms sagging skin around the eyes with Matrixyl & Skin Tightener ST & Copper

• Smoothes away crow’s feet and fine lines and protects with COQ10 & Vitamin C

• Reduce the appearance of dark circles, sun damage and freckles

with White Birch Extract & Vitamin K

• Protects with Emblica

• Cosmetically fills in fine lines with SoftTouch

• If you are 40 or above and have concerns with wrinkles, darkness under the eyes, sagging of the skin, creepiness, puffiness this is the eye cream for you!

Tight Eyed - This is a cosmetic primer.  The benefits of this product are temporary and have very little residual benefits.  Both Tight Eyed and Tight Fix are designed with a specialized polymer that actually "shrinks" as the product dries, offering a firm and tight appearance to the skin.  This is great to apply to give the skin a temporary lift, as well as being a fantastic makeup primer.  This product does contain alcohol, so I would recommend the use of Eye X Cel to supplement moisture.

Key Benefits:

Cosmetically tighten and firm the area around the eyes

• reduce puffiness under the eyes caused by fluid retention and skin congestion

• reduce dark circles and brighten the skin

Regeneration Platinum Line Reversal – This product exhibits both short term and long term benefits. Designed to act as a cosmetic substitute to Botox. This product temporarily helps relax the skin tissue to allow the skin firming peptides to penetrate to increase skin firmness and elasticity.

Key Benefits:

• An emollient skin treatment that visibly reduces the appearance of wrinkles and furrows and expression lines. See results in just 10 minutes that last up to 24 hours

• Contains peptides that help to “relax” the expression lines

• Has both temporary and cumulative skin repair benefits

Does BeautiControl test on animals or use ingredients derived from animal sources?

BeautiControl does not test on animals, and we request the same of the companies that supply our raw materials.

In the event that we should use an ingredient that is derived from animal sources, it is obtained ONLY as a by-product of the meat packing industry. No animals were harmed for the sole purpose of obtaining that particular ingredient.

What is rosacea and what can be done to treat this condition?

Rosacea is a chronic (long-term) disease that affects the skin and sometimes the eyes. The disorder is characterized by redness, pimples, and, in advanced stages, thickened skin. Rosacea usually affects the face; other parts of the upper body are only rarely involved. Approximately 14 million people in the United States have rosacea. It most often affects adults between the ages of 30 and 60. Rosacea is more common in women (particularly during menopause) than men. Although rosacea can develop in people of any skin color, it tends to occur most frequently and is most apparent in people with fair skin. Doctors do not know the exact cause of rosacea but believe that some people may inherit a tendency to develop the disorder. People who blush frequently may be more likely to develop rosacea. Some researchers believe that rosacea is a disorder where blood vessels dilate too easily, resulting in flushing and redness.

Factors that cause rosacea to flare up in one person may have no effect on another person. Although the following factors have not been well-researched, some people claim that one or more of them have aggravated their rosacea: heat (including hot baths), strenuous exercise, sunlight, wind, very cold temperatures, hot or spicy foods and drinks, alcohol consumption, menopause, emotional stress, and long-term use of topical steroids on the face. Patients affected by pustules may assume they are caused by bacteria, but researchers have not established a link between rosacea and bacteria or other organisms on the skin, in the hair follicles, or elsewhere in the body.

Although there is no cure for rosacea, it can be treated and controlled. A dermatologist (a medical doctor who specializes in diseases of the skin) usually treats rosacea. The goals of treatment are to control the condition and improve the appearance of the patient's skin. It may take several weeks or months of treatment before a person notices an improvement of the skin.

Some doctors will prescribe a topical antibiotic, such as metronidazole, which is applied directly to the affected skin. For people with more severe cases, doctors often prescribe an oral (taken by mouth) antibiotic. Tetracycline, minocycline, erythromycin, and doxycycline are the most common antibiotics used to treat rosacea. The papules and pustules symptomatic of rosacea may respond quickly to treatment, but the redness and flushing are less likely to improve.

Things you can do to help prevent rosacea flare-ups:

• Since the sun is linked to rosacea flare-ups, sunscreen protection of 15 or higher is very important.

• When choosing a chemical sunscreen, chose Avobenzone (Parsol 1789), a less irritating chemical sunscreen.

• Avoid using irritating products that might contain alpha hydroxy acids, beta hydroxy acids, harsh physical exfoliants, or alcohol.

• Secret Agent mint Color Primer will help to neutralize redness in the skin

• Skin Equations Problem Solver helps to reduce redness in the skin caused by rosacea or broken capillaries

• Skin Equations Protective Services with help with skin sensitivity or irritation

What is psoriasis and what can be done to treat this condition?

Psoriasis is a chronic but treatable autoimmune skin disease experienced by an estimated 5-6 million Americans and about 80 million people around the world.

While psoriasis is not typically life threatening, it can greatly affect your appearance, self-esteem and overall quality of life. Psoriasis can occur anywhere on the body, but the locations affected most often are the:

Elbows and knees

Arms and Legs

Nails

Trunk

Lower back

Scalp

The locations affected less frequently are the:

Palms of the hands and soles of the feet

Skin folds of the armpits, breasts, groin, and buttocks

Genitals

Psoriasis can also affect the joints (psoriatic arthritis).

Psoriasis Symptoms:

Psoriasis of the skin has several common symptoms. It is often itchy and may cause painful drying, cracking, or blistering of the skin. Psoriasis affecting the joints (psoriatic arthritis) can cause pain and make movement more difficult.

The best products to recommend to treat the symptoms of psoriasis would include:

• Extreme Repair Face and Body Cream to help build the skin tissue

• Skin Hydrator for the ultimate hydration of dry, cracked skin on the body and extremities

• Corticure Comfort Lotion for itching and irritation on the body

• Skin Equations Protective Services for itching and irritation on the face

• Therma Del Sol Olive Butter Balm to comfort and moisturize skin on the face or body

What is Celiacs disease?

Celiacs disease is a disease in which the body cannot process gluten, thus causing digestive disorders. Gluten is contained in ingredients such as wheat, oats, barley, rand rye.  Intolerence to gluten, however, is generally limited to products that are ingested, not those that are applied to the skin.

I do not understand why the new wet/dry shade conversion chart is different from last year’s Secret Agent shade conversion chart. Why are they different?

The purpose of the shade conversion charts was to identify which of the new wet/dry shades would be the closest match to the shade that was previously being used in the former wet/dry shades.  It is not likely that the new wet/dry shades will be an exact match to a shade that was previously used.

Last year's color comparison chart was comparing the former liquid foundation and wet/dry formulas to the Secret Agent formulas.  The comparison chart that was most recently published is comparing the previous wet/dry shades to the new wet/dry shades only  In the chart that compared Color Freeze Nude to the Secret Agent Nude, N2 was the closest match.  The Nude wet/dry, however, was much more pink than Nude Color Freeze, therefore, the closest shade is P2.

The purpose of this new letter/number system of shade distinction is to make the shades of foundation more consistent across all formulations.   All of the new wet/dry shades were matched to the shades of the Secret Agent foundations.

Remember, the conversion chart is not stating what you SHOULD be wearing, it is telling you what the closest matching shade is to the shade you were previously wearing.

What products should be avoided for a client that is pregnant?

It is recommended to avoid any product that contains Retinol for those who are pregnant. Retinol is a derivative of Vitamin A. Vitamin A is a fat soluble vitamin that is stored in the body rather for an extended period of time. Excessive levels of Vitamin A in the body has been linked to certain forms of birth defects. It is best to visit with a physician regarding vitamin A in both topical and ingestible forms.

Different physicians have differing opinions on this issue. It is best to consult your physician when you become pregnant and discuss what products you are using.

What is excema and what can be done to treat this condition?

Excema is a skin condition that results in very dry and itchy skin.  This can result in scratching which can irritate the skin and complicate the problem.

A person with excema can use any product as long the skin is not broken or irritated.  I would avoid products that contain alcohol or those such as the Regeneration Chemical Peel.  As long as the skin is not broken or irritated, you may find that the MicrodermAbrasion would help to alleviate the dry surface skin cells  that cause itching.

The key to treating this condition is to keeping the skin moisturized.   Some products that I would recommend would include:

• Regeneration Extreme Repair for face and body - this is a great moisturizer containing ingredients that help to thicken the skin tissue to better retain hydration.

• Regeneration Extreme Repair hand therapy - forms a great moisture lock on the hands to keep skin hydrated

• Show of Hands Instant manicure- a great way to moisturize the hands that are void of hydration.  Use Extreme Repair hand therapy afterwards to lock in moisture

• Therma Del Sol Olive Butter Balm - probably the best body moisturizer that we have for extremely dry skin.  very comforting for skin irritations as well

• Therma Del Sol Detoxifying Bath Soak - great moisturizing benefits as well as helping to relieve irritated skin.

• SPA mineral bath - very good for relieving itchy skin

• A basic skin care regimen such as Skin Equations that has fewer ingredients

• Corticure Comfort Lotion -  to relive itching and irritation

• Herbal Serenity Body Oil or Brown Sugar Body Oil - used in the shower to lock in moisture prior to towel drying

What are the Shadow Highlighters and how are they used?

The new Beauti eyeshadow duos are divided into 2 categories:

• Highlighter duos

o Ice Princess – this ivory/flesh toned highlighter duo is best for light and dark skin tones who want a more dramatic highlighting effect. The darker shade in this duo is perfect as a base coat shade while the ivory shade provides dramatic lift to the brows when applied directly under the eyebrows.

o Here’s Lookin at Ya – this medium tone highlighter duo was designed to offer highlighting options for medium and dark skin tones who might find the Ice Princess shades too light or dramatic. The darkest shade provides a beautiful base coat for darker skins while the lightest shade offers lift and highlight to the brows

o Yin and Yang – this unique highlighter is a dramatic choice for those that like to express their more dramatic side. The white shade lifts the brows, lightens darker shades to create new shade options or minimize darkness or shadows on the eyelids. The darker shades create contour to the eyes as well as add depth to shadow shades. This shade is great for those that want bold shadow shades. What is the best technique for working with the new shadows?

Eye makeup is the fun part of applying cosmetics. It is with your eye makeup that you can allow your creative side to take flight.

Your eyes are the focal point of your face. Be sure that your eye makeup techniques and choice of colors are most flattering to your coloring and personality.

With eye makeup you can create the illusion of new shapes and sizes. Things to keep in mind:

• light colors highlight and lift

• dark colors shrink or recede.

Step 1 - Sweep the lightest shade over the entire area from lash line to brow. This can be one of the highlighter shades or the lighter shade in your eye shadow duo. This shade will be your base color and is to your eyelid, what your foundation is to your face. It will hold your color and prevent creasing.

Step 2 - Apply a medium shade on the eyelid from lash line to crease. This is the part of the eye that most women apply eye shadow. Blend into your base shade.

Step 3 - A third color can then be added. Use a deep, dark shade to create depth. Apply this shade along the lash line as a liner shade, and at the outer corner of the eye, emphasizing the crease of the eye and brow bone. Blend well. This is your accent shade and when used can create a more defined eye.

The key is to blend so well that attention is still drawn to your eye, not your eye makeup.

How do I recommend skin care regimens without skin sensors?

Skinlogics, Skinlogics Gold and Skinlogics Platinum products were designed as part of a complete MRP system of skin care treatments (teamed with the appropriate Regeneration and Cell Block C products) designed to address the specific needs of the skin as it ages.  Rather than a typical dry, combination, oily skin care recommendation, addressing the specific needs of aging skin is a better way of customizing skin care regimens more maximum efficacy.  When we reformulated the Skinlogics lines, we took out the oil and the alchol - the only two ingredients that prevented all skin types from using any of the products.

Skinlogics = Skin that as little damage (typical of someone in her 20's)

Skinlogics Gold = Skin that has moderate signs of damage ( typical of someone in her 30's)

Skinlogics Platinum = Skin that has advanced signs of damage (typical of someone 40+)

The Skinlogics, Skinlogics Gold and Skinlogics Platinum formulas were developed with a good, better, best concept.

Skinlogics = very effective for cleansing, moisturizing and protecting the skin.

Skinlogics Gold = very effective for cleansing, moisturizing and protecting the skin as well as addressing the onset of lines and wrinkles, hormonal skin discoloration and more advanced signs of sun damage.

Skinlogics Platinum = very effective for cleansing, moisturizing and protecting the skin as well as addressing more advanced lines and wrinkles, hormonal and sun related skin discoloration lack of firmness and skin elasticity as well as the advanced signs of sun damage.

Personally, I would recommend a cleanser based on the consumer's preference (gel, foam, cream, oil) then recommend a toner and moisturizer that best address the skin's age concerns.

Do BeautiControl products contain Sodium Lauryl Sulfate (SLS)?

While we're aware of the rumors circulating on the internet, SLS/SLES is safe in consumer products when used as directed. These supposed safety concerns stem from some misquoted research and have no scientific basis. In fact, a search of scientific literature found nothing supporting these allegations. We've thoroughly tested our products to make sure they're safe.

What do I say to a client who is concerned about the safety of cosmetic ingredients?

The first thing that you have to know is that we are monitored by the CTFA, the governing body that ensures the safety and efficacy of ingredients.  The CTFA works hand in hand with the FDA to ensure that products are safe for consumer use.  We use pharmaceutical grade ingredients that are commonly used in many of the FDA approved prescription medications on the market.  If an ingredient were dangerous, we would not be able to purchase it, much less formulate with it.

Secondly, we sell cosmetics, not drugs.  The difference between a cosmetic and a drug is the ability of the ingredient to pass through the skin and cross the blood/brain barrier.  If a product enters the blood, legally it must be classified as a drug.  Unless an ingredient enters the blood, then there is no danger of the product causing any type of interaction in the body.
