Legend of the Week! – Dave (Smooth) Rohrbach

Dave “Smooth” Rohrbach fires from the mound! Although his hitting still needs to emerge, his 5 innings of 5-hit, 3 K, no BB, no run pitching stands tall! He got the win, and had to come back and earn the save with bases loaded and no outs!

Surely the “Legend of the Week” if Expos had won, Rick Mather no-hits the Redlegs through 5!

Game of the Week!

Redlegs over Expos, 3-2!

Redlegs’ Perspective!

After all the errors the previous game, this was a well-played game that actually resembled all the intricacies of how a baseball game should be! The Expos pitching dominated early, as their starter had a no-hitter going before he had to come out after the 5th inning! But the ‘Legs squeaked out a run off him, then added two more from the reliever, that held after the Redlegs made things interesting in the bottom of the 9th with Chris C. plunking 2 and a BB to load the bases. But Dave “Smooth” Rohrbach came back in to preserve his own pitching Win with a Save! Solid defense (only 2 Errors all day) closed out the game. “I was scared, because I did not want to have to answer to the Commish on how I blew a 3-0 lead after he left” stated coach Ken “Petro” Petrocelli. “I owe my next born to “Smooth” for bailing me out!” he added.

Explorers’ Perspective!

With ace Jeff Wright away, the Explorers' rusty pitching staff had more than their work cut out for them on Sunday evening versus the defending Legends champs' powerful lineup at Leitch Park.  The Pads broke open a close early game with a four-run 4th and three-run 5th, and the Explorer squad that had been so opportunistic in tallying ten runs against the Cards in Week 1 could only break through for three against Murph and the other Padres hurlers, as the Explorers (11 LOB) squandered numerous chances to keep the game close.  Mike Battaglia (2-for-3 with an RBI) led the Explorers at the plate, with Demian Dominguez (double), Sean Pugh, Gene Noll, Kevin Glodava, Matt Edwards and Patrick McCane delivering hits, while McCane and Nate Gross (bases-load walk) added RBIs.  Web-gems by McCane (from deep in the hole at short) and Akil Barlow (with a spectacular diving catch in center) provided bright spots for the E-team to build on.  "The way we were going, they probably didn't need to be running, up 12-3 in the eighth, but I guess we'll take it as a sign of respect," quipped Explorers skipper Edwards.  "What can ya say about RJ's guys? You gotta like 'em, 'cuz they pitch well, they hit with discipline all down the lineup, and they're gonna be a handful for anybody again this season."

Rebels’ Perspective

Rebels jumped out early scoring 8 runs in the first two frames...that's all they needed as the ace pitching combo of Narins and Conan held the Cards to just two runs over 8 full innings. Rookie Jasper continues to demonstrate good approach to the plate drving key hits up the middle. Credit to Cards # 5 for solo long ball over the left field fence...Go Rebels!!

‘Canes’ Perspective

In what may have been a preview of a future playoff game, two-time defending champ hurricanes found a dangerous opponent in the Warriors.  Although the Canes held on to win 11-8, the game was heavily contested from start to finish.  The game started as a pitchers duel and remained 5-4 until late in the game.  Sean Porter made a sensational diving stop and throw from third ending an early inning rally, Glenn Wright again showed why he's the best catcher in the league where he backed up first base on an errant throw and threw out a runner trying to take second, and David Yates turned a double into a double play, robbing the warriors of a double into the right center gap with a spectacular catch and then throw to first base.  Every time it looked as if the Warriors may take the lead, the hurricanes thwarted the rally.  Once again every player did their part, and as a team, the hurricane made it back to the W column.  Credit goes to John Dean, Jon Yates and Greg Budnik on a helluva job pitching out of trouble all game, and giving the hurricanes a chance to win.

It wasn't until the bottom of the 7th when the hurricanes exploded for 6 runs off a Warrior's pitcher that the Canes had been unable to crack until then.  The Warriors fought hard in the top of the 8th and made it close, but Jon Yates ultimately closed out the game with his first save of the season.   It was a team effort on offense, but its worth mentioning that Jon Yates had 3 hits, Mark Summa reached base all 4 times he came up, and Ben Deen continues to be the early season MVP going 3-3 with 2 2bs and 2 rbis giving him 5 now for the young season.  It is to be noted that nobody had more than 2 rbis, but 7 players had at least 1.  This team continues to contribute from top to bottom.  Great game.
