Jun Abaya comes from a distinguished and illustrious line of forbears. He is a direct descendant and great-grandson of Gen. Emilio Aguinaldo, who gave the country its independence and its identity as a Republic, and who also served as its first President. Likewise, he is a descendant of Isabelo Abaya, the revolutionary hero and founding father of Candon, Ilocos Sur. Jun is the second son of three-term Congressman Plaridel M. Abaya, whose seat in Congress Jun now takes over with one of the largest majorities ever won by a newcomer in the District’s political history.

Jun comes to Congress with impeccable educational and professional credentials. He was a consistent honor student at the Philippine Science High School, which paved the way for his engineering studies at the University of the Philippines (UP), where he received distinction as University and College Scholar. While in UP, Jun took and topped the entrance examination for the Philippine Military Academy. He was then sent by the government to the US Naval Academy (USNA) in Annapolis, Maryland, USA where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree in Mathematics with distinction, having been a consistent Dean’s Lister in all the semesters he was there. Jun then proceeded to Cornell University in Ithaca, New York, USA where he completed his Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering, also as a fellowship awardee.

Upon his return to the Philippines, Jun joined the Philippine Navy as an Ensign. He was given sea duties in different naval vessels, and it was during his assignment as Presidential Services Officer at BRP Ang Pangulo that then President Corazon C. Aquino called on him to serve as her Aide-de-Camp. Jun spent twenty (20) years with the Philippine Navy, retiring with the rank of Lieutenant Commander to face the even greater challenge of serving his constituents in the First District of Cavite.

With his sights set on Congress, Jun saw it fit to prepare himself further as a lawmaker by formally studying the law. He recently received his Juris Doctor degree from the Ateneo de Manila University School of Law in April 2005.

Jun is fully aware of the great expectations thrust upon him by being the great-grandson of Gen. Aguinaldo, and particularly by being the son of his predecessor in Congress who, as admitted by political foes and friends alike, served the District ably and zealously. Jun vows not only to continue his father’s projects but also to seek other programs that will benefit each barangay in the First District of Cavite, especially in the light of changing economic and social climate brought about by urbanization, modernization and the loss of traditional livelihoods. This is especially urgent in the coastal areas of the District as these parts become increasingly integrated into the suburbs of Metro Manila.

On a national level, Jun has committed himself to continue what Gen. Aguinaldo originally fought for – a truly free and independent Filipino beholden to no one and able to hold his own against the best the world has to offer. Jun believes that while he himself is an heir of Gen. Aguinaldo, it is really all of the Filipino people who are the true successors to the Aguinaldo legacy of nationalism and self-determination. Thus, Jun intends to file and support bills that will strengthen the Filipino’s education, improve his earning capacity, reward homegrown initiatives with international impact, preserve his culture and rekindle the patriotism that made him break the shackles of colonialism and stand up as a free citizen of the first republic in the whole of Southeast Asia. All of these Jun is determined to do for the First District of Cavite, for his Province, and for his country. This is best synthesized in the campaign slogan which helped catapult him to Congress – ABANTE CAVITE! Para sa Diyos, Para sa Bayan.

Jun is happily married to his batchmate at the Philippine Science High School, Dr. Rowena Abesamis, M.D. a pediatrician at the St. Luke’s Medical Center. They are blessed with three wonderful children, Emilio Francisco (Miong), Iñigo Jose (Ingo), and Felicia Maria Antonella (Ichay).
