Science Fair - Moore Public Schools

Science Fair

Dear Parents:

During the next few weeks your child will be completing a science project which uses the Scientific Process to solve a problem. Our science fair projects will be due on Friday, November 11, 2011 and our science fair will be held on Thursday, November 17, 2011. Science projects are primarily independent study assignments involving experimentation on a topic of individual interest. The educational benefits to the student who completes a project, which are numerous include, developing skills in writing, oral presentation, creative thinking and problem solving. Students will be required to display their experiments on science boards.

Students will need to provide a poster for all science fair projects. They will also need to complete a science fair journal throughout the project. We have placed an example journal on our web pages that you may print out or complete on line and print at the end of the project.

Science fair projects will be completed at home with checkups throughout the process by their teacher to ensure they are on track and completing the work correctly. Included with this letter is a timeline of due dates to help your student stay on track to meet the science fair deadline. Hopefully, this close supervision will help your child develop good time management skills and will ultimately result in a quality project.

Your child may need you to monitor his/her progress and provide encouragement. Your support is key to a successful project, but please do not allow your involvement to extend any further in order to assure equity and promote student learning.

Please take the time to read all of the information included in the science Fair Information Packet, sign the Parent/Student Agreement page on the back and return it to school on Friday, September 16, 2011. If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact Mrs. Aduddell (edenaduddell@) , Mrs. Balan (theresabalan@) or Mrs. Harrison (blaireharrison@).

With this letter I have included the following paperwork:

1. Student Handbook – This handbook outlines all the rules and regulations that need to be adhered to in order to have a successful project. I have modified the handbook to be more in line with elementary level entrants.

2. Science Fair Category Descriptions – This page will help you and your student choose a category that is best suited for their likes and dislikes. If there is a category you would like to explore that is not listed, please send me a note or e-mail and I will review the request and send back a response. Make sure to check the student handbook for guidelines when choosing outside the approved categories.

3. Security Release Form – Your student will not be excluded from participating in science fair, if you wish not to have their photo/video released for media purposes. A picture of every science fair project will be taken so that it may be logged into our district filing system, even if you choose not to have the information released for media consent. These projects will only be viewed by the district science fair coordinator for advancement to the state science fair.

4. 2011/2012 Moore Public Schools District Science Fair - This is the judging form that is used for all judging at the local and district level. This is for informational purposes only and is not required to be returned.

5. Suggestions – I have included a list of websites for science fair projects and places to buy cost effective materials. Please remember some of the best science fair projects do not cost a large sum of money. Innovation and creativity are far better measurements of success than expensive projects.

6. Science Fair Timeline – Included is the tentative timeline for completing each element of your student’s science fair project. This will help you remember what part of their project is to be completed at home for the week. Additionally, important dates to remember will be included.

Please return the bottom portion of this note stating that you have received the information provided for science fair. Please remember to include the security release form. Additionally, all forms and information can be found on our websites, under the science fair link.

Sincerely,

Mrs. Aduddell, Mrs. Balan and Mrs. Harrison
