God’s Sovereignty and Human Free Will: What Good Can Come From Studying It?

Often controversial. Sometimes devisive. Impossible to understand. Why even try to comprehend God’s sovereignty and human free will?

Theologian, best-selling author and ministy leader Randy Alcorn says in his new book hand in Hand: The Beauty of God’s Sovereignty and Meaningful Human Choice (Oct. 21, 2014/Multnomah Books), “One compelling reason to study them is to better understand what we cannont fully understand. And in the case of God’s sovereignty and human choice, while it’s not imperative that I understand everything, it is important that I believe in both.”

Alcorn tackles these two truths with a commitment to look at the prevailing positions (Calvinism and Arminianism) in light of all Scripture, not just the preferred passages that support one side or the other. The temptation is to emphasize either sovereignty or free will and negate or minimize the other. Alcorn suggests they are compatible, and we should embrace both.

Through hand in Hand, Alcorn, who finds the relationship of God’s sovereignty and human choice both intriguing and beautiful, offers additional reasons for understanding these topics, such as:

• To develop a deeper appreciation of God and His Word, which reveals Him to us

• To foster unity in the body of Christ

• To avoid both fatalism and crushing guilt

• To prevent us from becoming trivial people in a shallow age

hand in Hand gives readers the opportunity to carefully and honestly examine different views on the issues and gain a deeper understanding of God.

“A question need not be fully resolved in order to have some light shed upon it,” writes Alcorn. “It’s good for us to let God’s Word stretch our brains. Rather than frustrating, it can be enlightening and even exhilarating.”
