CertainTeed® FiberCement Siding, Asphalt Roofing Products Revitalize Large California Condominium Development

(Valley Forge, Pa.) – Members of the Griffin Glenoaks Homeowners Association (HOA) in Pacoima, Calif., are seeing a long-awaited aesthetic rebirth of their development with the help of CertainTeed® WeatherBoards™ FiberCement Siding and Landmark™ Plus designer asphalt roofing shingles.

Griffin Glenoaks, a 324-unit condominium and townhouse complex, suffered significant damage to its original siding and roofing in the devastating Northridge Earthquake of 1994. After the Griffin Glenoaks HOA finally received its complete insurance settlement, it hired Rossmoyne, Inc. (), a full-service general construction firm from Glendale, Calif., for a renovation of the buildings, which included re-siding, re-roofing, new mechanical units, structural seismic strengthening and an interesting green approach.

In an effort to divert materials from being landfilled, Rossmoyne, Inc., recycled 90 percent of the removed exterior building products on the jobsite. In addition, the HVAC units from the buildings were stripped and sent to the recycling plant to extract their copper components. All of the vinyl siding was recycled to make new window products.

Rossmoyne, Inc., also incorporated green components to the project through the selection of CertainTeed products for the exterior renovation — 1 million square feet of WeatherBoards FiberCement 8 1/4-inch Cedar Lap Siding, supplied by distributor Crenshaw Lumber, of Gardena, Calif.; and approximately 3,000 squares of Landmark Plus designer shingles, supplied by distributor Structural Materials, of Sun Valley, Calif.

“We went with CertainTeed because these are great products,” says George Pondella, Project Manager for Rossmoyne, Inc. “Their components strong and durable, and they have excellent warranties. These products, along with the manufacturer’s warranties, allow us the confidence to support the renovation responsibly for the next 10 years.”

Installation began in 2007 on the development’s 52 buildings. Completed earlier this year, the CertainTeed products and Rossmoyne’s installation work at Griffin Glenoaks are drawing compliments from both the condominium owners and development management. The development’s original roofing and siding dated back to its construction in 1982, so a facelift was due.

“The new roofing and siding look wonderful,” says Kelly Reinoso, Community Manager of Aberdeen Management, Griffin Glenoaks’ property managers. “They give a more updated, fresh look to Griffin Glenoaks. Our buildings have needed this work for quite some time, so we are very pleased to finally see this happen.”

“It’s amazing what quality new roofing and siding do for a building,” says Eric Nilsson, Vice President of Corporate Marketing, CertainTeed Corporation. “At CertainTeed, we offer the widest range of styles and colors on the market to complement any residential or commercial building. We’re confident that the long-lasting durability of WeatherBoards FiberCement Siding and Landmark Plus designer shingles will allow Griffin Glenoaks’ residents to enjoy their development’s new look for years to come.”

WeatherBoards features the most authentic wood grain in the industry and is manufactured using a combination of recycled fly ash, Portland cement, wood fiber and specialty additives. The enhanced formula, which is comprised of 30 percent post-industrial recycled material, creates an environmentally friendly, lighter-weight and lower-density product. It is impervious to wood-boring insects, resists damaging effects of salt spray and is available with a 50-year limited transferable warranty.

One of CertainTeed’s best-selling roofing products, Landmark designer shingles are the first two-piece, random-tab laminated shingles CertainTeed ever produced. They are UL certified to meet ASTM D3462 and feature StreakFighter™ Protection. Landmark Plus designer shingles weigh 300 pounds per square, are backed by a 40-year warranty and have a five-year warranty against winds of up to 80 miles per hour.
