Spanish Music Groups 101

Often children will complain about how boring, corny or foreign Spanish music sounds to them. Lets face it, Guantanamera, Las Mañanitas and De Colores are all half a century old or more and latino children in their own countries will never listen to these. So we need to learn and update our musical taste to encompass what the children in your class may be hearing. Just remember how you felt when you were a child or an adolescent and your parents wanted to hear Johnny Mathis or Andy Williams (not to signal out or discredit these artists or their fans).

Nowadays access to most types of music from Latin America is assured with the use of the internet. Basically, you can find the same types of music in Spanish as the ones that your students like to hear in English. There are even some western artists that record their most popular songs in Spanish (i.e. Sting, Shakira, Jennifer López or J-LO- as she likes to call herself these days, Marc Anthony, Police, etc). Most of the artist pages listed here contain lyrics and music that you can download to prepare your lesson plans and at the same time try to get your students interested in some music of their own liking but in Spanish. In fact some of these bands you may like too!. Finally, always check lyrical content for school appropriateness. Many of these bands deal with very serious topics in their lyrics that range from social issues to economic, racial, sexism and political issues. All of these are themes worth of discussing and learning in class. We must realize that the social role that music plays in Latin American countries is different than the roles assumed by music in the US.
