OLD CAHAWBA ARCHAEOLOGICAL PARK RECEIVES STATEWIDE DISTINCTION
On January 2, 2017 Alabama Living, the official statewide publication of the electric cooperatives in Alabama, announced Old Cahawba as the "Best Prehistoric/Archaeological Site" as part of their "Best of Alabama, 2017" contest.
The magazine, which reaches about 400,000 electric cooperative consumers throughout the state, holds its annual "Best of" contest to highlight the places, people and products that make Alabama great. The 2017 list will raise awareness about the history and experiences to be had at Old Cahawba.
"The Alabama Historical Commission and many dedicated partners have been working a very long time to save historic Old Cahawba and to make it a place that Alabamians care about and want to visit," said Linda Derry, Site Director of Old Cahawba. "Being voted `Best of' by the statewide readership of this widely circulated magazine is a validation of a lifetime of dedication and work. We are thankful to those who voted for us, and are thrilled to know that through the pages of Alabama Living, so many more Alabamians will become aware of the park at Old Cahawba, and will be motivated to come visit this very special place."
Old Cahawba, Alabama's most famous ghost town, lies at the confluence of the Alabama and Cahaba Rivers. It served as the state's first capital from 1819 to 1826. Today, the Alabama Historical Commission owns and operates this significant archaeological site.
