UMES Students Win 2006 American Society of Engineering Education Model Design Competition

Princess Anne –2006 American Society for Engineering Education (ASEE) Model Design Competition was held in Chicago, Ill. on June 19. As in the past the event was sponsored by the Two Year College Division of ASEE and was open to freshman and sophomore student teams from two year as well as four year colleges and universities. Sixteen student teams across the nation qualified and participated in the event this year. University of Maryland Eastern Shore (UMES) student team “UMES-Hawks1” led by Mr. Edward Lee Long scored 526 out of a possible 543 points to win the competition. A video-clip of the UMES winning entry recorded during the competition can be viewed and downloaded from the URL: .

The competition required teams to design and build an autonomous robot capable of delivering ping pong balls to each of four corner pockets located on an 8’ X 8’ plywood track in a sequence. All teams had to design their robots within the same space and budget constraints and follow a set of guidelines provided by the competition rules (). Each team was evaluated on the basis of a written report, an oral presentation, and scores from best two out of four trials on the track during the event. The “Helicon” and the “Innovate” teams both from Monroe Community College were placed second and third with 505 and 497 points respectively. The second team from UMES, “UMES-Hawks4” was placed seventh.

The project was initiated during the fall of 2005 by the American Society for Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student section at UMES and was open to all freshman and sophomore students in Engineering, Engineering Technology, Mathematics and Computer Sciences majors. Ms. Amy Jarrett, the current ASME student section President, took a lead role in putting a student team together and in developing a proposal to the Complete Research Cycle (CRC) initiative at UMES under the ACTION (Advanced Curriculum and Technology-based Instructional Opportunities Network) project funded by National Science Foundation (NSF) under the Historically Black Colleges and University- Undergraduate Programs (HBCU-UP), to secure funding to implement the project. Dr. Emin Yilmaz (Professor) in the Department of Technology and Dr. Abhijit Nagchaudhuri (Professor) in the Department of Engineering and Aviation Sciences in the School of Business and Technology at UMES served as the faculty advisors for the project. Significant portion of the manufacturing efforts were conducted under the supervision of Professor Emin Yilmaz in the Department of Technology facilities.

Student team members that represented UMES at the 2006 American Society for Engineering Education Model Robot Design Competition in Chicago were: Mr. Edward Lee Long (Mechanical Engineering), Ms. LiAundra Calhoun (Mechanical Engineering Technology), Mr. Mark Bivens (Electrical Engineering Technology), Mr. Travis Turner (Mathematics), and Ms. Amy Jarrett (Mechanical Engineering). Other contributing student team members were (who did not attend the competition): Mr. James Vainqueur (Mechanical Engineering Technology), Ms. Lamis Abunora (Electrical Engineering), Mr. Temitope Olowoporoku (Electrical Engineering), Mr. Dagem Mengeste (Mechanical Engineering), Mr. Vernon Carter (Mechanical Engineering), and Mr. Lonko Tuma (Electrical Engineering).

Prior to the ASEE model design competition in June at Chicago, the student teams also participated in a poster presentation at the HBCU-Research Day held at UMES in April 2006.

This is the first time UMES students participated in the national design competition held annually during the American Society of Engineering Education (ASEE) annual conference. ASEE is the premier multidisciplinary society for individuals and organizations committed to advancing excellence in all aspects of engineering and engineering technology education.
