PhD Studentships in Aerodynamics and Aeroacoustics

PhD studentships are now available in the areas of aerodynamics and aeroacoustics at the Advanced Aircraft Noise Technology Centre at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. The studentships provide unique opportunities to work on aircraft and performance (racing) engineering aerodynamics and fundamental aeroacoustic physics, or on a relevant engineering problem relating to aircraft and transport systems, and speeding engineering. The studentships provide opportunities to engage with aerospace industries, performance sports industries and a competitive stipend.

Available research activities:

• Aircraft aerodynamics

• Performance engineering aerodynamics including racing car and sports aerodynamics

• Computational and experimental aeroacoustics

• Drone noise and physics-based drone noise models

• Acoustic meta-materials

• Design, fabricating and testing new sensors and measurement techniques for aerodynamic and acoustic experiments

The research projects use high-fidelity computational fluid dynamics and computational aeroacoustics algorithms and codes, advanced test and diagnostic facilities, and theoretical analysis. The applicants will have opportunities to develop a research profile in either one or more fields. For more information, please see . Eligible students can also apply for the Hong Kong PhD Fellowship Scheme (HKPFS) . This scheme offer a higher stipend and aims at attracting the best and brightest students in the world to pursue their PhD studies in Hong Kong's universities.

Hong Kong University of Sciences and Technology: Founded in 1991, HKUST is an international research university with strong ties to global Thought leaders, while having wide-ranging connections with Mainland China. It promotes interdisciplinary studies, dedicated to educating well-rounded students to acquire a strong entrepreneurial spirit and innovative thinking – the necessary foundation and skills for the changing world. The University campus is located on a hillside and waterfront complex overlooking the Clear Water Bay peninsula and a 30 minute drive away from central Hong Kong.

The Aerodynamics Acoustics & Noise control Technology Centre (AANTC): AANTC is based in the School of Engineering. The school has a strong international reputation and consistently ranks high among major engineering schools around the world. In the 2013-14 Times Higher Education World University Rankings in Engineering and Technology, HKUST was ranked No. 1 in Greater China and 21st globally. AANTC, led by Professor Xin Zhang, brings together academic staff, research fellows and PhD students using state-of-the-art computer simulations and advanced anechoic wind tunnel testing to develop new computational methods, noise prediction methods, noise reduction concepts, and provides engineering solutions for industry. The centre possesses advanced computational fluid dynamics and computational aeroacoustic codes, and various noise and flow facilities. The group has extensive academic links and industry collaborations. We work closely with local and international aerospace industries, and also with performance sports engineering professional and national societies.

Entry requirements: The candidates should have a first class or upper second class degree (or its equivalent) in relevant disciplines, e.g., mathematics, aeronautics or engineering.

PhD start date: continuous; currently admitting for 2019 entry

Closing date for applications: A rolling deadline applies.

If you wish to discuss any details of the project informally, please contact Professor Xin Zhang, Email: aexzhang@ust.hk Tel. + (852) 3469-2220. Website:
