What are the twelve powerful words?

Trace, Analyze, Infer, Evaluate, Formulate, Describe, Support, Explain, Summarize, Compare, Contrast, Predict.

Why use the twelve powerful words?

• These are the words that always give students more trouble than others on standardized tests.

• These are higher level thinking words.

• Children need to be exposed to these words all year so they feel comfortable with them when they see them on a test.

Strategies:

1. Use them daily.

2. Have a word of the day.

3. Display using a poster

4. Put the 12 words on your tests throughout the year.

5. Use them on daily quizzes.

6. Have students create their own test and quizzes using the 12 words.

7. Word of the week.

8. Let students make a classroom poster using their own synonyms.

9. Create a rap song using the 12 words.
