Supplies List for Beginning Watercolor

Instructor: Cecily Byk – 973-644-4777

For this class we will be using tubes of paints only, no cake paints.

|Paints you will need: |Recommended but not necessary: |

|Cadmium Yellow – Medium or New Gambrage |Cerulean Blue |

|Cadmium Red |Raw Sienna |

|Alizarin Crimson |Opera Rose |

|Permanent Rose |Arabic Gum for mixing |

|Burnt Sienna | |

|Sepia | |

|Payne’s Grey | |

|French Ultramarine Blue | |

|Hooker’s Green or Sap Green | |

A note about watercolor paint: Try to get only individual tubes of paint instead of sets. Sets will include paints you won’t even use. Student grade paints such as Reeves or Cotmans’s by Winsor & Newton will be cheaper but of lesser quality, the colors will be much duller due to the additives and extenders. Watercolor labels that say “Artists” on the label are of better quality. Winsor & Newton Artists colors or Holbein paints are a few that are excellent.

In addition to the paints, you will need:

✓ Watercolor Paper – 140# (pound) Cold Press Only Water Color Blocks, 10x14 or 12x16 inches.

o DO NOT get Hot Press, Rough Paper or individual sheets

o Arches cold pressed watercolor blocks work best with what we will be doing in class. Anything else will not work well.

✓ A Drawing Board, or Watercolor Board, larger than the paper you purchase – made of a durable, hard surface that will not warp and is easy to clean. Alternatively you can use a drawing board. Do not get foam core, cardboard or paper surfaces.

✓ A large mixing tray or palette with plenty of room to mix paints. Sizes vary nothing smaller than 8x12 inches. Butchers Tray are ideal.

✓ Watercolor Brushes:

o Rounds: #1, #3, #6, #8 and #12 round (one each)

o Flats: 1.5 inch and 2 inch flat (one each)

o There are many brands on the market and synthetic brushes from Princeton, Richard Simmons, and Silver Brush are good choices.

o Note: Similar to paints, avoid purchasing sets of brushes, as they will include some that you will not be using, and tend to be of cheaper quality, so they tend to be a “waste” of money. Look for and buy individual brushes.

✓ A White Eraser

✓ Drawing pencil(s) 3F – no yellow #2B school pencils

✓ Masking Tape or Painters Tape

✓ Several “Quart Size” plastic containers for holding water during class (takeout soup containers work great – no glass as they can break)

✓ An “Exacto” knife

✓ A 12 inch Ruler

✓ A small “fine mist” sprayer

✓ Optional: A Portfolio of some sort to carry and protect your work and supplies

Warning: If you are pregnant, please check with your physician before enrolling in the class as some of the paints may be toxic. (Per the label on the paint)

A note about art supplies: If you have never taken a painting or art class, please be aware that art supplies can be expensive. In addition to the art supply stores noted below, you can purchase supplies on the internet or via a catalog at better rates. Watercolor paints such as Cotman can cost $3 for a .5ML tube in a catalog but will cost 30% higher in retail stores.
