How to Avoid 6 Timeshare Buying Rip-Offs

Don't fall into these common traps

These are common traps and scams that are used to trick people into spending too much money on buying a timeshare. Watch out for these, so that you don't get ripped off on buying a timeshare.

1 - That free trip could cost you big time. Timeshare sales people lure their prospects in with a variety of free goodies. You could be offered a free 2-night stay at a resort, or you might get a deal for a free car rental, discount activity tickets, or credits to spend on food and beverages. Whatever the offer is, be prepared for this to lead into a high-pressure sales pitch. Many people have walked into these deals with no intention of buying a timeshare, and walked out again after spending $25,000 or more. Don't EVER buy a big ticket item like this without doing your homework first and knowing what you're getting into.

2 - It's not an investment. It's a common line for timeshare salespeople to use, telling you that you're making an investment. Timeshares are not like purchasing normal real estate. The value of a timeshare almost always goes down from the original purchase price, often dropping precipitously. Many people are shocked to realize they can't sell their timeshare for more than a small fraction of what they paid the developer. (Hint - Think about how you can turn this one to your advantage... More on that later!)

3 - Financing does not make it affordable. In an effort to explain how you can afford to buy a $25,000 timeshare, sales people will often talk about financing your purchase, in order to work out monthly payments you can afford. The trap here is focusing only on the monthly payment
