Day-To-Day Ways to Save Money

On Food:

• Look for “Manager” specials. Stock up if it’s a good price for something you will use.

• Use coupons if they apply to the exact item you will be buying.

• Consider store brands and compare “Unit” Prices to get the best deal.

• Shop for fresh produce while it is in season to find a better deal.

• Don’t take your children (and remember your spouse is usually your biggest child).

• Utilize local food programs such as: Prairie Land Foods and Share Colorado.

• Consider having a potluck once a week with friends or neighbors.

• Consider Savings/Coupon sites like .

At a Restaurant:

• Drink water instead of pop or tea.

• If you have children, let them share a meal or search for “Kids eat free” nights.

• Have an appetizer as a meal.

• Use the Entertainment book or other coupon sources. You may be able to save up to 50% on meal costs.

On Utilities:

• Buy a programmable thermostat or at least make slight adjustments when you won’t be home.

• Change your furnace filters at least every 3 months, if not every month.

• Switch to compact fluorescent bulbs.

• Turn down the thermostat on your water heater and flush it out yearly.

• Wash clothes with cold water. Line-dry your clothing inside.

• If you use a dishwasher, then check your heat settings to see if it can be lowered.

• Consider a level-pay plan with your utility companies.

• Consider a pre-paid phone plan or consider a text plan versus a higher minute allowance.

• Unplug items when you’re not using them, or you are still using electricity.

• It is NOT better for your computer to be in hibernation mode rather than shut off.

On Vehicles:

• Figure out how much of a vehicle you can afford. A maximum of 20% of your net income for all vehicle expenses is what we recommend.

• Don’t buy a new vehicle. Try a used car with 36,000 miles or less.

• Check the resale value of a vehicle before you buy. or .

• Buy your vehicle at the end of the month; you can make a better deal.

• Before you buy your next vehicle, research the insurance costs- it may be too high. And Comparison shop your insurance to at least 5 companies.

At the Gas Pump:

• Keep your engine tuned up, change the oil every 3,000-5,000 miles and keep your tires inflated to the proper pressure.

• Use the lowest octane required to run your vehicle.

• Car pool, take the bus, walk or ride a bike; all great alternatives to using up the gas in your vehicle.

• Turn off your vehicle if you’re going to be idle for longer than 30 seconds. Longer than that and you actually use more gas than you would to turn it off and restart it. (myths/idling.html)

When Buying Clothing:

• Shop at the end of the season and buy closeouts/clearance and consider shopping at Goodwill, DAV and garage sales.

• If you have internet access, keep an eye out for not only clearance items, but free shipping days as well.

Miscellaneous:

• For movies or books, get a library pass and check them out for free.

• Exercise at home rather than at a gym.

• If you want to see a movie at the theater, go during the day while prices are lower and have a light snack before you go to avoid the temptation of the high-priced snacks they offer.

• Avoid extended warranties; they are seldom used. Recommended only for laptop computers, plasma TVs and treadmills.

• Use Media Mail instead of priority mail for printed materials and CD’s when the package weighs less than 1 lb. Using zip+4 can speed up Media Mail for no extra charge.

• Cultural events at colleges and universities are cheap if not free.
