TARGET AUDIENCE

This program is designed for all advanced practice providers and registered nurses who care for pediatric patients from birth through adolescence in outpatient and inpatient health care settings.

COURSE DESCRIPTION

The annual Pediatric Advanced Practice Nursing conference is sponsored by Children's Mercy Kansas City and has a long tradition of providing nurses with education on current issues and topics important to advanced practice providers. This year's conference will focus on topics that will strengthen your practice and clinical skills, energize you, and provide networking opportunities. Presentations from expert clinicians will provide participants with interventions and information to face the challenges of care in this changing health care environment.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the end of the conference, the participant will be able to: 1. Describe the current state of nurses in the media. 2. Discuss best practice for safe opioid prescribing. 3. Recognize appropriate utilization of antibiotics. 4. Describe child medical neglect. 5. De ne current work being done in pharmacogenomics. 6. Discuss the care of patients requiring pectus excavatum and pectus carinatum surgeries. 7. Describe Advanced Practice Providers' role in leadership. 8. Discuss diagnosis and treatment of enuresis

ACCREDITATION

This educational activity has been awarded 6.75 contact hours, 2.75 of which meet requirements for pharmacotherapeutic content.

Children's Mercy Kansas City is an approved provider of continuing nursing education by the Midwest Multistate Division, an accredited approver by the American Nurses Credentialing Center's Commission on Accreditation.

NewHouse is a non-pro t organization, primarily serving Kansas City's urban core, with a mission to break the cycle of domestic violence by providing the tools that allow individuals and families to make positive choices and lead self-sufficient lives. Newhouse has an 88-bed shelter and transitional facility that provide emergency safety, children's services including access to education, adult and child mental health therapy services and outreach, case management, transitional living, court advocacy, and community awareness. Newhouse serves as many as 1,000 women and children each year. The therapeutic environment NewHouse provides is designed to address the emotional, practical, and social needs of adults and children in the shelter, and ultimately enjoy a violence-free life.

KEYNOTE SPEAKER

Diana J. Mason, PhD, RN, FAAN is the Senior Policy Service Professor for the Center for Health Policy and Media Engagement at George Washington University School of Nursing. She is Professor Emerita and Co-Director of the Center for Health, Media, and Policy at Hunter College, City University of New York, where she was the inaugural Rudin Professor of Nursing until 2016. Dr. Mason is the immediate past president of the American Academy of Nursing, former editor-in-chief of the American Journal of Nursing, and co-producer and moderator of a weekly radio program on health care issues since 1985. She is the lead editor of the award-winning book, Policy and Politics in Nursing and Health Care, now in its 7th edition and the author of over 200 publications. Her scholarship focuses on health policy and what can be learned from nurse-designed models of care.

Dr. Mason is the co-principal investigator for a study funded by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation to explore how nurses address building a culture of health in their innovative models of care; the study is a collaboration between the American Academy of Nursing and the RAND Corporation. She is a member of the board of directors for the Primary Care Development Corporation and the National Advisory Board for Kaiser Health News. She holds two honorary doctorates, as well as numerous awards for her teaching, policy leadership, publications, and journalism.
