Hosts announced for Badminton Canada 2015 and 2016 Canadian Open Grand Prix, 2016 Canadian Senior National Championships and 2016 Canadian Masters ChampionshipsOTTAWA (Badminton Canada) – Badminton Canada announced Monday the hosts for the 2015 and 2016 Canadian Open and 2016 Canadian Senior National Championship and 2016 Canadian Masters Championships. The 2015 and 2016 Canadian Grand Prix will be hosted by Badminton Alberta in Calgary Alberta at the Winsport’s Markin MacPhail Centre. The 2015 Grand Prix will be held June 22 to 28 with the dates of the 2016 event to be confirmed shortly.The Canadian Open Grand Prix is the highest level Badminton World Federation international event organized in Canada on a yearly basis. The 2014 Canadian Open Grand Prix was held at UBC Thunderbird Arena and hosted over 200 of the top international players. This included top ranked Canadian Athlete Michelle Li, currently ranked 12th in the world, who won the Women’s Singles event in 2014. The Canadian Senior National Championship is the highest level of domestic event organized by Badminton Canada and welcomes more than one hundred and twenty of the top Canadian badminton athletes to compete for the national title in men’s and women’s singles, men’s and women’s doubles and mixed doubles. The 2014 Canadian Senior National Championship was held at the Vancouver Lawn, Tennis and Badminton Club.“Winnipeg Winter Club is excited to?be given?the?opportunity to host the 2016?National Badminton Championships” said Archie Chawla, the head badminton professions at the Winnipeg Winter Club. “The club has a long history of hosting major events including many national Badminton events. This will mark the return of national level badminton to Nova Scotia and the Halifax Canada Games Centre since the 2011 Halifax Canada Winter Games.The Canadian Masters Championships is an annual championship for players 35 years and older and is open to players from around the world. It is also part of the qualifying process for the 2017 World Masters Games. In 2014, the Championship was successfully hosted by the City of Burlington and the Burlington Badminton Club where they welcomed over two hundred and fifty players from across Canada, South America, Asia and Europe.“It is an honour being chosen by the Badminton Canada selection committee to host the National Masters Championship in 2016”, stated Kerry Lynch, President of Badminton Nova Scotia. “We are pleased Badminton Canada recognizes our strong commitment to develop the sport in the East and we are grateful for an opportunity play the role of host.
