A Peek at the Week…

Reading/LA: We will be continuing to develop routines within our balanced literacy block. We will begin Unit 3 - Living Things: Strong & Healthy. We will continue

Unit 7 in phonics. Unit 7 we will be introducing new glued sounds. There will be four new glued sounds ending with ng (ang, ing, ong, ung) and four ending with nk

(ank, ink, onk, unk). Vowels combined with either ng or nk are also taught as welded or “glued” sounds rather than segmented separately. For example, the sounds /ing/

and /ink/ are taught with 3 fingers welded together and tapped as weled or “glued” sounds. The ng is technically a diagraph and nk is a blend.

Math: We will be finishing Module 2 in Eureka Math. Module 2 serves as a bridge from problem solving within 10 to work within 100 as students begin to solve addition

and subtraction problems involving teen numbers (1.NBT.2ab). We will complete our work with Topic D. Topic D closes the module with students renaming ten as a unit: a

ten (1.NBT.2a). This is the very first time students are introduced to this language of ten as a unit, so this is exciting! The unit of ten is the foundation for our

whole number system wherein all units are composed of ten of the adjacent unit on the place value chart.

Science: We will begin discussing sound.

Social Studies: We will begin studying Lewis and Clark and their exploration of the United States.
