BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONS

BIBLE DISCUSSION GROUP STUDY QUESTIONSIn preparation for Sunday, April 20, 2014 Passage: 1 Corinthians 15:1-12Memory Passage: 1 Corinthians 15:1-2DAY 1 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGERead 1 Cor. 15:1-12. In vs. 1-11 Paul reminds the Corinthians of the facts of Christ’s resurrection. He is not making a case to prove the resurrection, but simply restating what he has already preached to them and is accepted fact.According to v. 12, what Corinthian misunderstanding is Paul addressing in this chapter, and how is Christ’s resurrection (assumed and recounted in vs. 1-11) central to countering this misunderstanding?Paul reminds the Corinthians of “the gospel” he preached: In your own words, explain “the gospel.”What confusion and misunderstanding do you observe in the 21st century American church that could be overcome by a better understanding of the Gospel, and how, specifically, would this better understanding overcome this confusion?DAY 2 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGERead 1 Cor. 15:1-12. In what way do you, one who has received the gospel, currently “stand” (v. 1) in that same gospel?Again, as a believer who has both received and now stands in the gospel, how are you in the process of being saved (“by which you are being saved”) and how do you know that your future salvation is sure (cf. Rom. 5:9 & 1 Thess. 5:9-10)? What does it look like, in your daily life, to “hold fast to the word (i.e. the gospel)?”What does Paul mean by “unless you believed in vain” (i.e. not holding fast = believing in vain, it foreshadows v. 14, he thinks their understanding of the gospel is incomplete, or something else)?DAY 3 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGERead 1 Cor. 15:1-12. With what Scriptures is the fact that “Christ died for our sins in accordance?”What is meant by the phrase, “for our sins,” and why is it important if we are to properly understand the gospel? Why is the fact that Christ “was buried” important in a passage that teaches the reality of the resurrection of Christ? With what Scriptures is the fact that Christ “was raised on the third day” in accordance?DAY 4 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGE Read 1 Cor. 15:1-12. What is Paul’s main point in naming the list of witnesses in vs. 5-8?What is the importance of saying that “most (of the 500) are still alive, though some have fallen asleep (i.e. died)?”Read Acts 8:1-3, 9:1-2, Gal. 1:13, Phil. 3:6, & 1 Tim. 1:13: Record what you learn about Paul’s persecution of the church and his own post-conversion view of his former persecution.DAY 5 – ASK FOR INSIGHTREAD THE PASSAGE Read 1 Cor. 15:1-12. How does Paul know that God’s grace toward him “was not in vain?” What would Paul’s life have looked like if it was in vain? What is Paul intending us to understand when he says, “I worked” and “but it was not I, but the grace of God that is with me” both in the same sentence? How can they both be true, and what application of this truth can you make for your own life?Even though it is not Paul’s purpose in these verses to defend the resurrection, how can his statement of facts concerning the resurrection help you to witness the truth of the resurrection to skeptical non-believers with whom you have a relationship? The act of preaching serves as bookends for this passage (vs. 1, 2, & 11). Think of situations in which you will find yourself in the presence of lost people this week and write down several ways that you will engage in conversations that will cause them to ask you about the hope you have so you can give them the reason with gentleness & respect (1 Peter 3:15).DATE: April 20, 2014 PASSAGE: 1 Corinthians 15:1-12The Fact of the ResurrectionIn 1 Corinthians 15:1-12 Paul presents 4 facts concerning the resurrection of Christ. ................
