The Sermon The Rev. Rob Keim

THE NICENE CREED Deacon and people (BCP 358) Please stand as you are able

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, seen and unseen.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven: by the power of the Holy Spirit he became incarnate from the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with

the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

2

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son. With the Father and the Son he is worshiped and glorified. He has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

THE PRAYERS OF THE PEOPLE Form II

I ask your prayers for God’s people throughout the world: for Michael our Presiding Bishop, for Mary our Bishop; for the Bishop Search Committee and Candidates for 4th Bishop of El Camino Real; for this gathering; and for all ministers and people. Pray for the Church. Silence

I ask your prayers for peace, for goodwill among nations, and for the well being of all people. Pray for justice and peace. Silence

I ask your prayers for the poor, the sick, the hungry, the oppressed, those in prison. We pray for Emily, Wyatt Christopher, Jim Ostrovine, Shirley Kiefer, Gary Richmond, Jennifer, Joe, Cindy, Michelle, Ted and Skaffi. (Reader inserts prayers from the bidding book.) Pray for those in any need or trouble. Silence

I ask your prayers for all who seek God, or a deeper knowledge of him. Pray that they may find and be found by him. Silence

I ask your prayers for all the departed. We pray for the repose of soul for Rev. Roger Johnson. Pray for those who have died. Silence

Praise God for those in every generation in whom Christ has been honored. Pray that we may have grace to glorify Christ in our own day. Silence

The deacon adds a concluding collect.

THE CONFESSION

The Deacon says

Let us confess our sins against God and our neighbor.

Presider and People

Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

The Presider says

Almighty God have mercy on you, forgive you all your sins through our Lord Jesus Christ, strengthen you in all goodness, and by the power of the Holy Spirit keep you in eternal life. Amen.

THE PEACE

Presider The peace of the Lord be always with you.

People And also with you.

Then the Ministers and People greet one another in the name of the Lord.

ANNOUNCEMENTS

THE HOLY COMMUNION

Offertory 8 am Instrumental

10am O Wondrous Type! O Vision Fair (The Gospel of St. Luke & Hymn 137) by Paul Halley

3

Doxology 380 Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; praise Him, all creatures here below;

praise Him above, ye heavenly host; praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost. Amen.

[pic]

God of all power, Ruler of the Universe, you are worthy of glory and praise.

Glory to you for ever and ever.

At your command all things came to be: the vast expanse of interstellar space, galaxies, suns, the planets in their courses, and this fragile earth, our island home.

By your will they were created and have their being.

From the primal elements you brought forth the human race, and blessed us with memory, reason, and skill. You made us the rulers of creation. But we turned against you, and betrayed your trust; and we turned against one another.

Have mercy, Lord, for we are sinners in your sight.

Again and again, you called us to return. Through prophets and sages you revealed your righteous Law. And in the fullness of time you sent your only Son, born of a woman, to fulfill your Law, to open for us the way of freedom and peace.

By his blood, he reconciled us. By his wounds, we are healed.

And therefore we praise you, joining with the heavenly chorus, with prophets, apostles, and martyrs, and with all

those in every generation who have looked to you in hope, to proclaim with them your glory, in their unending hymn:

Holy, holy, holy Lord Presider and People sing Music pew card

Holy, holy, holy Lord. Holy, holy, holy Lord. God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest. Hosanna in the highest.

The Presider continues

And so, Father, we who have been redeemed by him, and made a new people by water and the Spirit, now bring before you these gifts. Sanctify them by your Holy Spirit to be the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ our Lord.

On the night he was betrayed he took bread, said the blessing, broke the bread, and gave it to his friends, and said, “Take, eat: This is my Body, which is given for you. Do this for the remembrance of me. “After supper, he took the cup of wine, gave thanks, and said, “Drink this, all of you: This is my Blood of the new Covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins. Whenever you drink it, do this for the remembrance of me.”

Remembering now his work of redemption, and offering to you this sacrifice of thanksgiving,

Presider and People say We celebrate his death and resurrection, as we await the day of his coming.

4

The Presider continues

Lord God of our forbearers: God of Abraham and Sarah, Isaac and Rebecca, and Jacob, Leah and Rachel; God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ: Open our eyes to see your hand at work in the world about us. Deliver us from the presumption of coming to this Table for solace only, and not for strength; for pardon only, and not for renewal. Let the grace of this Holy Communion make us one body, one spirit in Christ, that we may worthily serve the world in his name.

Presider and People say

Risen Lord, be known to us in the breaking of the Bread.

The Presider continues

Accept these prayers and praises, Father, through Jesus Christ our great High Priest, to whom, with you and the Holy Spirit, your Church gives honor, glory, and worship, from generation to generation. Amen.

The Lord’s Prayer

Deacon And now, as our Savior Christ has taught us, we are bold to say,

Deacon and People

Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be thy Name, thy kingdom come, thy will be done, on earth as it is in heaven. Give us this day our daily bread. And forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us. And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil. For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

Children are always welcome at St. Barnabas. If you would like to have your child with you during the service, books and toys for children are available in the entrance. We have a “family room” at the back of the church, where you can see and hear the service if you need some privacy with your small child. If you prefer, you can take your child to our nursery for infants and toddlers. Please let us know, in advance, if you need childcare for any of our events and we will be glad to arrange it for you!

Youth Classes (during the 10 am service only):

• Pre-Kinder, Kinder, and 1st to 4th graders are welcome in Room 2, next to the nursery.

• As we currently have no regulars in this age group, 5th and 6th graders are welcome to join the class of their choice.

• 7th through 12th graders are welcome to join our Youth Forum class in the Forum Room (the smaller room adjoined to the Parish Hall). The schedule varies, please inquire. On the 4th Sundays of each month, the youth can sit with their families in the sanctuary. On any occurring 5th Sundays of the month, they optionally serve in various areas in the service.

Healing Station - During communion, we have a healing station located in the back of the sanctuary on the west, choir side of the church. Those who wish prayers for healing of mind, body or spirit for themselves or someone else are invited to receive the laying on of hands.

Bidding Book: If you would like to add a prayer to be read during the church service you may add it to the “Bidding Book” located at the back of the church to the left of the doors.

Help us provide a peaceful and worshipful environment by turning off all cell phones/pagers and by

refraining from unnecessary conversation in the sanctuary. Thank you.

Candles on the altar are lighted by St. Barnabas to the Glory of God.

The Floral Arrangement below the cross has been placed by St. Barnabas to the Glory of God.

Life at St. Barnabas

Diversity Sensitivity Training   All of us have internal biases.  Diversity training is designed to facilitate positive intergroup interaction, reduce prejudice and discrimination, and generally teach individuals who are different from others how to work together effectively.

The diocese will host Diversity Sensitivity Training at St. Barnabas in Arroyo Grande on March 9 from 10am to 4pm. This is one-day training that will meet the requirements for “anti-racism” training required for all lay licenses and for local parish leaders.  Attending the full day is required to receive the certificate of completion, and both lunch and childcare will be provided.  Please let us know if you will join this training so that we can have materials available.  This could be the most important training you attend in 2019.

Senior Potluck Lunch: St. Barnabas' Seniors & Friends, we hope to see you on Friday, March 15th at 11:30 a.m. for our next Senior Potluck Lunch!  A time set aside for fellowship, to share a meal, catch up with friends, and maybe make some new ones (newcomers, please join us!) ~ a main dish and beverages will be provided.  Please bring salads, side dishes, desserts, or other "munchies" to share.  If that's not possible for you, please join us anyway. A sign-up sheet will be posted in the Parish Hall.  All are welcome!

New Adult Series   Our four-week Lenten study series on the Enneagram begins on Thursday, March 21st at 6:15pm.  We all want to grow spiritually and know more about ourselves.

The Enneagram is an ancient personality type system with an uncanny accuracy in describing how human beings are wired, both positively and negatively. In this series we will provide a practical, comprehensive way of accessing Enneagram wisdom and exploring its connections with Christian spirituality for a deeper knowledge of God and of ourselves.  Beginning with changes you can start making today, the wisdom of the Enneagram can help you get on the road that will take you further along into who you really are―leading you into places of spiritual discovery you would never have found on your own, and paving the way to the wiser, more compassionate person you want to become.  Please join and bring a friend.  Supper and childcare are provided.

Living Room Conversations A few weeks ago we used the Living Room Conversation process to talk about our variety of experiences with worship music. In this way we practiced being in conversation with one another. Next, we would like to hold follow-up Living Room Conversations on other topics that we often avoid. With the polarization that has happened these day in American society, some of us feel like we can’t talk about topics and issues for fear of getting into bitter conversation. However, St. Barnabas should be a place where we can talk about the things that are important to us. We should be a safe place. Sign-up to take part in further small group living room conversations on topics such as “American Culture: Melting pot or salad bowl or something else?”. This time we will meet in homes for the discussions. Join in on the conversation.

-----------------------

Welcome to St. Barnabas!

We are delighted to have you join our worship today and hope you feel at home and will return often. Do come to the parish hall for refreshments after the service; it will give us a chance to visit. Please sign our guest book on the greeters’ table at the church entrance. The Visitor’s Card and brochures in the pew rack might be of interest. Assisted listening devices are available on the greeters’ table.
