Fellowship Group Discussion Questions

1. Discuss the historical background of Daniel 5. What other world power was threatening the city of Babylon during the events of this chapter?

2. Recall from the sermon: Why was Belshazzar throwing a feast and toasting the gods of gold, silver, iron, wood and stone? What did these idolized building materials (gold, iron, stone etc.) collectively represent?

3. Read verses 18-23. How did God reveal his sovereign power to Belshazzar? What similarities do you note between Daniel’s indictment of Belshazzar in 5:22 and Paul’s indictment of all humanity in Romans 1:19-21.

4. Read Daniel 5:23 and note especially the end of the verse. Why was it foolish and futile for Belshazzar to elevate himself above God?

5. Read again Romans 1:19-21. How does ignoring God lead to similar foolish and futile thinking?

6. Is it possible to be a Christian and, like Belshazzar, lift up your own pride against God? Is it possible to depend on idols of silver and gold (wealth), iron, wood and stone (possessions) for your safety and security? How is it possible for a Christian to slip into this futile way of thinking?

7. Assess yourself. In what ways does your life honor the God who holds your breath in His hands. In what ways does your life not honor Him?
