Introduction

Most Christians think that evangelism is preaching the gospel to non-Christians. This understanding of evangelism is short-sighted and limited in scope. The concept of evangelism realistically displayed in the Bible is much more extensive. Evangelism is not only about preaching the gospel, but includes the nurturing of a new believer into a mature disciple, who will bear fruit in their fields of life. Because the nurturing of a worker is so vital, evangelism encompasses training the new believer in this way. In light of this, the E.B.S. training for workers will prove to be very important. In addition, the workers who undergo this training will need to have an exceptional sense of commission and diligence.

The Evangelism Bible Study (EBS) Worker

The EBS worker is someone who possesses the life of Jesus and can continually nurture new believers with a strong sense of commission.

1. The person who is qualified to be an EBS worker

(1) A person with a positive outlook

(2) A person who always puts his or her trust in the Holy Spirit

(3) A person filled with heartfelt gratitude for his or her salvation

2. The person who is not qualified to be an EBS worker

(1) A person with negative attitude

(2) An easily irritated person

3. The basic attitudes of the EBS worker

(1) You must be focused on leading people to accept Jesus Christ.

(2) You must help new believers mature in faith through prayer. This is because they do not have the strength to pray on their own or have others praying for them.

(3) You must be a friend to new believers. They may have new conflicts in their lives after accepting Christ, so giving them the Word to overcome difficult situations and being their friend is very much needed.

(4) You should not make new believers depend on you too much and there is no need to make them just like you.

(5) As much as possible, take part together in conferences, prayer meetings, and other events such as birthday parties. When you spend time with them, you will be able to understand their personalities and help them accordingly.

Lecture 1

What is Evangelism?

Matthew 16:13-20

The evangelist must not be deceived and forget the reality, or lose hold of the faith that God is with him. Evangelism begins when the evangelist experiences true happiness knowing that God is walking with him. When he realizes that lost souls have no way to receive salvation except through the gospel, he has no choice but to see Mt 28:20 come alive in his every step. If this is true, then nothing is as easy as evangelism. Evangelism is not something you do, but something that happens. Then what kind of person does God use for evangelism?

1. The worker whom God uses

(1) The person who knows God’s greatest concern (Ac 13:48)

* The one thing that God sees as most important, urgent, and valuable is evangelism. This is because evangelism is God’s work through us (ICo 1:21).

(2) The person who accurately knows who Jesus is (Mt 16:13-16)

* God uses the one who sincerely knows that Jesus is the Christ, the Messiah. The Lord uses the worker who knows the name that was prophesied thousands of years ago in the Old Testament. God looks for the workers who know who God is, who Jesus is, and who he himself is.

(3) The person who knows the assurance, conviction, and blessing of salvation.

* When Jesus Christ died on the cross, he broke the authority of Satan and sin. God uses the person who has received the grace of knowing Jesus Christ, and he uses those who know the blessing of becoming children of God, and the evidences of salvation (1Jn 5:11-13). He uses those who have the assurance that Christ was hung on the cross for sinners without demanding anything of us or presenting us with conditions. God regards the person who knows the grace of coming into the place of salvation and his amazing calling as being precious in his sight.

(4) The person who seeks after desperate souls (Ac 16:14-15)

* God allowed Paul who was desperate to share the gospel to meet with Lydia who was desperate to receive it.

(5) The person who knows the Biblical method (Mt 28:18-20)

2. The blessings that believers in Jesus receive (Mt 16:17)

(1) The blessing of the rock (Mt 16:18): the blessing to proclaim the gospel

* If you lose hold of the blessing of evangelism, you lose hold of everything. There are so many places to share the gospel. But if you have interests in other things, your concerns are different from God’s.

i. Ac 1:8 ii. Mt 24:14 iii. Mt 28:18 iv. Mk 16:15

(2) The blessing to overcome the gates of Hades (Mt 16:18): the blessing to overcome the authority of the world, hell, and the devil

i. Eph 2:2 ii. 1Jn 3:8 iii. Ac 10:38

(3) The blessing to receive the keys of the kingdom of heaven: the blessing of answers to prayer

i. Mt 16:19 ii. Jn 14:6 iii. Ac 4:12

Lecture 2

The Method of Evangelism

Mt 28:16-20

The reason we can boldly preach the gospel is because Jesus himself identified nonbelievers as being “weary and heavy-burdened” (Mt 11:28). We must preach the gospel humbly yet boldly, and utilize the method of evangelism revealed in the Bible.

1. The hidden strategy: like serpents, doves, and yeast

* Fruitful evangelism is done wisely as a serpent and spreading unnoticeably like yeast.

(1) Mt 10:16 Be as wise as a serpent and innocent as a dove.

(2) Mt 13:33 The kingdom of heaven is like the yeast that a woman took and kneaded in the flour until it worked throughout the dough.

2. The Darakbang Evangelism Movement

(1) What is Darakbang?

(The ‘upper room’ evangelism movement)

- It is the method of the Early Church that serves as our model of how believers should discover God’s purpose and plan for every field they are placed in; of how they should evangelize; and of how they should do the ministry of the word.

i. The name of Jesus

ii. The life of Jesus

iii. The power of Jesus

iv. The healing of Jesus

v. The prayer movement

(2) God desires to change the field and give power to the believers.

Therefore, the Lord wishes for His living Word to be fulfilled in every part of our lives. This is what pleases God the most.

3. The evangelism strategy that appears in the Bible (Mt 28:18-20)

(1) Raising workers: “Therefore [you]”

(2) In every region: “Go”

(3) Making disciples: “and make disciples”

(4) Evangelization: “baptizing them”

(5) Nurturing the workers: “and teaching them to obey”

4. The training of disciples in the field (2Ti 2:2)

* Analysis of the field

i. New believers ii. Present believers iii. Committed workers

5. Examples in the Bible

Ac 2:41, 46, 6:7, chapter 9, 11:26

Ac 14:21-22, 16:15, 17:1, 9, 18:1-4, 19:8-10

Col 4:15

Strategy, Message, and Acceptance

John 1:12

The 2 strategies of Evangelism:

(1) New believers: This is the greatest harvest field of evangelism (because they are connected to many other nonbelievers). Therefore, nurturing and training the new believer is directly related to evangelism.

(2) Present believers: This is how to conquer the region. The success and failure of evangelism depends on how you help a new believer. If you can begin the ministry of the Word by penetrating into a region through present believers, great works will arise.

1. The first message when helping a new believer or opening a darakbang (upper room) meeting with a present believer:

* Would you like to receive Jesus Christ? You can receive him into your heart through prayer.

You have come to the most blessed place today.

* Acceptance Prayer

Dear God, I am a sinner. I have lived my life on my own not trusting you until now. But I now believe that Jesus is the Christ who died on the cross for me and rose again. I open the door of my heart and receive Jesus as my Savior and my Lord. Please come into my heart and guide me forever. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.

* What you must share with the person who has received Jesus as their Savior:

What must you do after receiving Jesus Christ? Just enjoy the simple and grace-filled blessings of God.

(1) Worship: Must be considered the most important thing in your life.

(2) Bible Study: Will help you to grow in your faith and enjoy the blessings of being God’s

child.

(3) Prayer: Only the children of God have the privilege to pray.

(4) Evangelism: Now we must share “Jesus Life” with those who are wandering not knowing God (through the darakbang meeting, you can lead them to church).

* You must truly experience the living God (Heb 13:8). The secret to this is to believe and receive Jesus Christ as your Master (Jn 2:1-11, Gal 2:20).

Training 2

Questions for the Person that You are Nurturing

1. Guidelines for the leader

(1) Preparation for the darakbang meeting: nurturing others (growth), fellowship, a field of evangelism (the importance of the leader’s personal darakbang- ministry of the word and spiritual preparation)

(2) Preparation of the Message: the leader must receive grace from the Word first (the effectiveness of evangelism tracts)

(3) Building a network: utilize your daily personal relationships as doors of evangelism (name, contact information, time of prayer, time and location for a meeting)

2. Questions for the person that you are nurturing

(1) When did the suffering of mankind begin and when will it end?

i. Gen 3:1-5, 16-20 It started with humankind’s separation from God.

ii. Lk 16:19-31 There is no end to the suffering.

(2) Why did the suffering of humankind begin?

i. Gen 3:1-5 Because people separated from God.

ii. Jn 8:44 Because they fell into the temptation of the devil.

iii. Eph 2:1-2 The spirit died as man became a slave of the devil.

iv. Ac 10:38 People became oppressed by the devil.

(3) How was this solved?

i. 1Jn 3:8 Jesus came and solved this problem.

ii. Jn 14:6 He opened up the way.

iii. 1Pe 3:18 He went to the cross and died to solve all our problems.

(4) What happened to the suffering of humankind?

i. Isa 53:5-6 Jesus solved the problems of our spirit, heart, and body.

Training 3

The Gospel and Religion

Acts 4:12

If a person accurately and sincerely preaches the gospel, God will take full responsibility over His evangelist. You must know how to recognize doors of evangelism (Col 4:2-3). God has hidden the laypeople whose hearts are on fire for the gospel. There are so many places to evangelize but no one to visit those places.

1. What is not the gospel (You must help the new believer because he/she cannot distinguish between what is the gospel and what is not the gospel) :

(1) Good works (Isa 64:6): No matter how good-natured a pirate on a pirate ship may be, he is still a pirate.

(2) Philosophy, ideology, beliefs (Col 2:8-9): Because of these things, people are blinded from knowing God.

(3) Religion (Mt 12:43-45): The deeper you go deeper into religion, the more you suffer.

(4) Efforts (Jn 3:1-4)

* None of these things can solve our original sin.

|Religion |Gospel |

|Begins with man |Begins with God |

|Man seeks God |God came to man |

|Effort |Faith |

|Law |Life |

2. The start of the true Gospel (starting point)

(1) Grace (Eph 2:8) - the ground for salvation.

(2) Faith (Eph 2:8.) -the means of salvation

(3) It is a gift (Eph 2:9-10).

(4) The starting point (Eph 2:8-10) - is God. For example, the bronze snake, Passover lamb, and the blood of the lamb.

(5) The end (Ro 8:31-39) - You are completely safe; you can never end up on the road of destruction.

3. The True Value of Salvation

(1) Mt 16:17-19 You have received the blessing of the rock, the strength to overcome the authority of hell, and the keys of answers to prayer.

(2) Jn 5:24 Your past, present, and future problems are solved.

(3)1Pe 3:18 “For Christ died for sins once for all, the righteous for the unrighteous, to bring you to God. He was put to death in the body but made alive by the Spirit.”

Training 4

Know Your Enemy

1 Peter 5:7-8

1. Satan (the devil) is the father of nonbelievers (Jn 8:44)

Before the nonbeliever believes in Jesus, he is a child of the devil.

2. Satan is the enemy of believers (1Pe 5:7-8)

Genesis 3 to Revelations 20 contains the nature and activities of Satan; therefore, you must know of his existence. If you are unaware of this, there is the danger of compromising the gospel with other religions and beliefs (i.e., Shamanism).

3. Who is Satan and what does he do?

(1) The rebel (Rev 12:9). He challenges the authority of God.

(2) The divider or accuser (Gen 3:1-5). He brings division between God and man.

(3) He controls demons for his sake (Rev 12:9).

4. Satan’s strategy

(1) 2Co 11:14 He masquerades as an angel of light.

(2) 1Pe 5:7-8 He prowls around like a roaring lion looking for someone to devour.

(3) Eph 6:11 He schemes to work through your weaknesses.

(4) Eph 6:12 He works through the rulers, authorities, the powers of this dark world, and the spiritual forces of evil.

(5) Eph 6:13, 16 He is the enemy of the work of God.

5. Satan’s authority has been crushed.

(1) Prophecy (Gen 3:15). It was prophesied that Jesus would crush the power of Satan (the original gospel).

(2) Fulfillment (1Jn 3:8). Jesus came to destroy the work of the devil.

6. The status of the saints

(1) Set free from the curse (Ro 8:2). Through the law of the spirit of life, you have been set free from the law of sin and death.

(2) Ones who have gained life (Jn 5:24). You have crossed over from death to life.

(3) Ones who have been born again (Jn 1:12). The children of God.

7. Satan hinders and bothers the believers who have received salvation.

(1) Eph 4:25-27 Do not give the devil a foothold.

(2) Eph 6:13-16 Put on the full armor of God.

(3) Jas 4:7 Resist the devil and he will flee from you.

8. The way to win

Eph 5:18 Be filled by the Holy Spirit.

(4) 1Co 3:16 You have become a temple in which the Holy Spirit of God dwells.

3. The solution to the problems

(1) Jn 16:7 The Counselor, the Holy Spirit, has been sent to us.

(2) Gal 5:16-17 Follow the guidance of the Spirit.

(3) 1Jn 2:20-27

(4) Ac 8:4-8

4. The believer’s way of life

(1) Ac 13:1-4 You must always be led by the Holy Spirit.

(2) Php 4:6-7 Change your worries into prayer topics.

(3) Jn 15:7 Ask whatever you wish.

*Testimonies are needed for the new believer to grow. It will be good to share your honest testimonies of how you received answers to prayers and how the Word of God worked in your life.

*Things to watch out for:

Criticizing others

Negative words

The Worker God Uses (I)

The Person with the Correct Foundation in Life

Acts 2:1-42

You cannot wrap up a burning coal with a piece of paper. In the same way, you cannot have a true taste of the truth through a ritual. Who is the person that God will use? It is someone who possesses a correct foundation in life. Then what kind of person has this correct foundation?

1. You must first receive the grace of the Holy Spirit (Ac 2:1-13)

(1) When you gather with a sincere heart (Ac 2:1)

(2) When you receive the Word (Ac 2:2)

(3) When you pray with assurance (Ac 2:2-3)

(4) When the day of Pentecost came (Ac 2:1)

(5) They were all together in one place (Ac 2:1)

2. You must understand the central theme of the gospel (Ac 2:14-36)

Peter’s sermon:

|Scripture |Fulfillment of Prophecy |Meaning |

|Ac 2:14-21 |Joel 2:28-32 |The fulfillment of the promise that the Holy Spirit will come to the |

| | |upright believers |

|Ac 2:22-32 |Ps 16 |The evidences of David |

|Ac 2:33-35 |Ps 110 |Connecting the ascension of Jesus with the advent of the Holy Spirit |

|Ac 2:36 | |The present ministry of the resurrected Jesus |

3. You must have the correct response concerning the gospel (Ac 2:37-41)

(1) If you want to receive the Word correctly (Ac 2:37)

(2) Two things people need to do from their side(Ac 2:38)

(3) Two things that God does from his side (Ac 2:38)

(5) The results that appear with the correct response to the gospel (Ac 2:41)

4. You must live a life that is acceptable to the gospel (Ac 2:42-47).

* This is where the power of God’s works is manifested (working of the Holy Spirit).

(1) Receive the apostles’ teaching (Ac 2:42)

(2) Enjoy active fellowship (Ac 2:42)

(3) Lifestyle of breaking bread – the importance of worship (Ac 2:42)

Training 9

The Worker God Uses (II)

Believers with the Original Color of Faith

1 Thessalonians 1:1-10

Thessalonica, a territory of Rome at the time , was a large city of flourishing businesses in the region of Macedonia. Its residents were mainly Greeks, Romans, and because of the large number of Jews, there were many synagogues. After Paul’s few weeks of evangelism in this city, many Christians were born. But because of the severe persecution from the Jews, Paul had to leave the city in the middle of the night. The Church at Thessalonica is a model church for believers because of her perseverance through trials. The color of your faith is the decisive factor in experiencing the work of the Holy Spirit and having revival.

1. The root of the believer’s life and Paul’s greeting (1Th 1:1)

2. A mature model of faith (1Th 1:2-3)

(1) A mature model of faith (1Th 1:2)

(2) Characteristics of their faith (color)

- Three intrinsic elements and the extrinsic fruits that follow (1Th 1:3)

- Faith without external results is of no use.

- These three elements of faith are the consummate grace

(1Th 5:8, Ro 5:2-5, Gal 5:5-6, Col 1:4-5, Heb 6:10-12, 1Pe 1:21-22, 1Co 13:13)

|Elements of Faith |External Results |Explanation |

|Faith |Work |Faith works without rest. It is made to bear fruit; without it, that |

| | |faith is dead (Jas 2:17). Faith does not end with doctrine or words. |

| | |Faith is life and life is active. |

|Love |Labor |Love willingly labors. Because God is love (IJn 4:8), he gave us the |

| | |life of his Son while we were bound for destruction. |

|Hope |Endurance |The one who has hope can endure any hardship. The ultimate hope is the |

| | |return of Jesus (1Th 4:17). |

3. Spiritual predecessors (1Th 1:1-7)

* There are many factors that led to the mature faith and character of the believers at the Church at Thessalonica, one major factor being that they had excellent spiritual leaders.

4. Let us examine Paul’s circumstances of his preaching of the gospel (Darakbang movement) (1Th 1:5): Five elements

(1) The course of the gospel: the precise transmission of the gospel (Ro 10:14-15), three weeks of bible study (Ac 17:2-3)

(2) The phenomenon that appeared: Power (Mk 1:22)

(3) The work of the Holy Spirit: Power and assurance are from the Holy Spirit. Words without the working of the Holy Spirit are nothing.

(4) Intrinsic element: Assurance

(5) Model of an evangelist: The evangelist must preach the gospel with love and devotion.

The Person Who Knows the Bible

2 Timothy 3:14-17

1. The character of the Bible

(1) The Bible is the Word of God (2Ti 3:16). The Bible is God’s Word that is given to humankind through the prophets and apostles who were inspired by God. It is our manual for life.

(2) The Bible is a Book of prophecy (Rev 1:3). Because the Word accurately foretells the events of the future, a person who remains ignorant of it will face great disaster.

(3) The Bible is God’s eternal promise (Isa 40:8). Not only is the Word infallible, it was prophesied that it would exist forever. The reason is because it testifies to the eternity of God.

i. The Bible is the method God gave us (2Pe 1:21).

ii. The supremacy of the Bible (1Co 2:13)

(4) The Bible will absolutely be fulfilled on earth (Mt 5:17-18).

(5) No one can add or subtract from the Bible. If one changes the Bible, curses will be upon him (Dt 4:2, Rev 22:18-19). If one does not believe in the Bible, or chooses to add to, or delete from it, he will be cursed.

(6) The Bible guides men to the bright road of life and firmly establishes them (Ps 119:105, Ac 20:32).

(7) The Bible uncovers the will of God and is the weapon to overcome evil and the devil (Mt 4:4, 7, 10).

2. What is the content and theme of the Bible?

(1) The Bible warns us that humankind fell into the devil’s temptation and became sinners who are ignorant of God and because of that sin is on their way to hell (Gen 3:1-13, Eph 2:1-3).

(2) It is the promise that sinful people can be saved when they believe in Jesus Christ as the Messiah (Gen 3:15, Jn 8:56).

(3) The Old Testament promised over 400 times that the Savior would come to the world. The New Testament is evidence of the fulfillment of those prophecies (Isa 7:14, Mt 1:21).

(4) It is the promise that the one who believes this Jesus and accepts him will receive salvation (Jn 3:16, 1:12).

(5) It is the promise that the Holy Spirit dwells within and guides the one who accepts Jesus into his or her heart (Jn 14:16, 26, Ro 8:2).

3. The purpose of studying the Bible

* Jn 20:31, Ro 15:4, 1Co 10:11

4. The way to realize God’s Word
