Daniel BroganFood incMovie: Food Inc.The movie Food Inc. that came out in 2009 which was directed by Robert Kenner is a documentary that shows us the other side of food industry that we do not know about. This documentary gives the audience a behind the scenes look at what the food industry is doing to treat the animals we use for food and also the living conditions that these animals lives in and how horrible the conditions are that these animals live in. In this documentary Ethos, Logos, and Pathos were all used as tools to help the filmmakers persuade the audience to support their side of the cause, and show you how bad the food industry actually is. Food Inc. gives an exclusive behind the scenes look of the food industry where you couldn’t get anywhere else and shows you the dark side of the food industry. The documentary Food Inc. is narrated by Eric Schlosser and Michael Pollan. These two men show bring us into a world of the food industry we never thought we would see. In this documentary it shows how poor the living conditions are for the animals that major food companies own and butcher and sell to the public. The filmmakers bring us to one company’s chicken farm and show us what it looks like. When it is finally revealed to the audience, what is shown is shocking. The conditions that the chickens live in are awful. The chickens are all packed into small building with almost no lighting and nowhere to move. The chickens are also way oversized because of the food that is being feed to them. The food that they are being fed increases the speed at which they grow and how big they become. Some are so big that they can’t hold their own weight up and are only able to walk few steps before they eventually fall back to the ground. The pure look of the entire place where the chickens live is repulsive. Also in the documentary a story is shown about a young boy who died because of e coli from meat he ate at a fast food restaurant. He ended up dying two weeks after but the food was not recalled until 16 days after. One more thing that was shown in this movie was the family going to get food. The documentary shows how it is easier and cheaper to spend money on fast food rather than being able to spend their money on healthy food. With them spending money on just fast food, it is shown clearly that it is taking a toll on the family’s health.Pollan and Schlosser both did a very good job in this documentary. They used Ethos as a tool in this film to show the audience their side of the story and whats really going on in the food industry. Pollan and Scholosser both seemed very credible when they spoke on the subjects. They each went to various amounts of people in which they gained a lot of information about the process of the food industry. When they go to the chicken farm they learn about what is going on with the chickens and about their living conditions and the food they eat. After going to the chicken farm, a lot was learned about the food that is being given to the chickens to make them grow faster and make them bigger. We also learned unhealthy that was for the chickens because some weren’t even able to support their own body weight and every time the walked they just fell to the ground. I trusted them more as the movie went a long because of how they present the information and how the people they interview support what they are saying. They both went to go interview the different food companies but almost every single one declined. I feel that because each company declined interviews, it only supported their side because it shows that they know what they are doing is wrong as well. By acting like this, I was persuaded to take Pollan and Schlosser’s side because these companies can’t even comment on the conditions of a small chicken farm they own, because they know of how disgusting it is but they just turn the other cheek because it is cheaper and it gets them bigger and better products quicker even though it is completely wrong how they are doing it. This shows that both Pollan and Schlosser are right about how disgusting the different places companies use to grow their products. In food inc. Pollan and Schlosser build up evidence supporting their arguments. When they visited the different farms I feel like that’s where they built the strongest support. First when they visit the chicken farm for the big time companies. When showing the unhealthy farm and then showing the all natural farm with the man who does it all natural and feeds the animals correctly also. When they were giving numbers and statistics is also what helped them build their arguments. Back in the 1970s 5 meatpacking companies owned up to 25% of the market. Today 4 major meatpacking companies own 80% of the market. This shows that most of the food available to buy comes from the big companies whose food is coming out to be very unhealthy. Also it is shown that 70% of America’s hamburger meat is sprayed with ammonia. While ammonia is used to clean the meat, it is also extremely bad for you when you ingest high amounts of it so, the food industry risks their customers health just for a quicker easier way to clean the meat. Also when the family was interviewed, the numbers show how much easier it is to buy unhealthy food rather than getting the healthier food. The family could spend 1 or 2 dollars on a meal for atleast one family member on a dollar menu for fast food but when they go to the market, it could get up to almost four or five dollars just for a single ball of lettuce. It is sad how fast food can be so bad for you but be so much cheaper than something that is a lot better and healthier for you.In this documentary the filmmakers do a good job of getting emotional responses from the audience. One huge example of this is when the story about Kevin Kowalcyk. He was the boy who passed away from the sickness he got from the meat he ate at a fast-food restaurant. This story gets the audience upset and feels sympathy for the mother of the boy. Another emotional response is when the women are shocking the little chickens. Also the hole on the side of the cow is put in to disgust the audience. Lastly another way the filmmakers get the audience to react is the chicken farm and showing the fat chickens that are not able to walk and how horrible the conditions the chickens live in. I believe Pathos is used a lot in this documentary because if they show how gross the whole process is. By grossing the audience out, the filmmakers persuade the audience to go against the food industry and take their side. Since what the audience is shown is so disgusting, it could convince them and cause them to go out and support their side against the food industry because they don’t want the way their food to be handled in such a disgusting manner. ................
