Michigan Women’s Sports Summary

CROSS COUNTRY

The UM women's cross country team earned its second straight sixth-place finish (250 points) at the 2005 NCAA Cross Country Championships at the LaVern Gibson Championship Course in Terre Haute, IN, behind the All-America performance of senior Rebecca Walter (Beverly Hills, Mich./Birmingham Groves HS). Stanford won the team crown with 146 points. Walter earned All-America honors for the third time in her career as she led the No. 3-ranked Wolverines across the finish line in 27th place. Improving eight spots on her placing at last season's NCAA meet, Walter registered a time of 20:26.0 in her final collegiate cross country meet, finishing just 13 seconds outside of the top 15 placers. Walter completes her U-M career as just the second Wolverine cross country runner to earn three All-America citations.

The No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team continued its streak of excellence as it repeated as NCAA Great Lakes Regional champion on Nov. 12, 2005 at the IU Cross Country Course in Bloomington, IN. The Wolverines finished with 52 points, 16 points better than second-place Notre Dame; both teams earned automatic trips to the NCAA Championships by finishing in the top two.

Sophomore Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) led the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women's cross country team to its fourth consecutive Big Ten Conference title at the Big Ten Championships on Sunday (Oct. 30) on Les Bolstad Golf Course in Falcon Heights, MN. The Wolverines won by an 18-point margin over second-place Illinois.

At the 2005 Big Ten Championships the Maize and Blue placed all five scorers in the top 14. Michigan has finished in the top two at the Big Ten Championships in 13 of McGuire's 14 seasons at the helm, while 11 of his squads have earned top-15 national finishes and seven have finished in the top 10.

University of Michigan women's cross country head coach Mike McGuire was named Big Ten Conference Coach of the Year, earning his fourth straight conference award and his seventh overall, while sophomore Alyson Kohlmeier (Sarnia, Ontario/St. Patrick's) is U-M's Big Ten Sportsmanship Award recipient, as announced by the league office on November 2, 2005.

The team had 16 members earning selection to the Big Ten Fall Academic All-Big Ten team.

FIELD HOCKEY

Michigan (16-8, 3-3 Big Ten) concluded the 2005 campaign with its seventh straight NCAA Tournament appearance. The Wolverines also won the Big Ten Tournament for the third time in program history.

In the Big Ten tournament, Michigan defeated Iowa, #1-seeded Penn State and Indiana in succession to take home the title. In the NCAA Tournament, Michigan beat Boston University in the first round 4-3. However, Michigan would face a tough second-round opponent in Old Dominion, falling 3-2 in the NCAA Quarterfinal round to bring their season to an end.

University of Michigan senior Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) was selected as one of 16 collegiate student-athletes named to its 2005 NCAA Division I All-America first team. It was the second All-America citation for Hillman in her career, adding to her third-team recognition in 2004.

Hillman, the Big Ten Tournament's Most Valuable Player, was also an All-West Region first team choice for the second time after registering one goal and nine assists for 11 points while quarterbacking the Michigan defense, which limited opponents to just 1.89 goals per game and posted five shutouts.

Two players were selected for Big Ten honors. Senior midfielder Lori Hillman (Gibbsboro, N.J./Eastern Regional HS) was a repeat selection on the All-Big Ten first team, while junior midfielder Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy) made the first team in 2005 after earning second-team honors a year ago. Hillman is also Michigan's recipient of the Big Ten Sportsmanship Award.

Six members of the University of Michigan field hockey team were also named to the Division I National All-Academic Squad as announced by the National Field Hockey Coaches Association on March 7, 2006. The Wolverines were also recognized collectively, earning 2005 NFHCA Division National Academic Team Award recognition for boasting a combined grade point average of 3.0 or higher during the fall semester.

The honorees include junior Jill Civic (Wescosville, Pa./Emmaus HS), junior Mary Fox (St. Louis, Mo./Cor Jesu Academy), freshman Stephanie Hoyer (Englewood, Colo./Cherry Creek HS), senior/junior Nicole Lonsway (Rockville, Md./Thomas S. Wootton HS), senior/junior Lauren MacMillan (Husdon, Ohio/Hudson HS) and senior/junior Katie Morris (Ann Arbor, Mich./Pioneer HS).

The team had 11 members selected to the Big Ten Fall Academic All-Big Ten team.

GOLF

Using a final round three-over 75 from sophomore Lindsay Davis (Dexter, Mich./Dexter HS) and a five-over 77 from junior Brianna Broderick (Richmond, Mo./Richmond HS), the University of Michigan women's golf team held off a late charge from SMU to take home the team title at the 2005 Wolverine Invitational on October 2, 2005 at the U-M Golf Course.

Individually, senior Amy Schmucker (Cold Spring, Minn./Rocori HS) helped the Wolverines to victory after her medalist runner-up finish. After opening with a career-best and U-M record-tying four-under 68 in the first round, she ran into putter troubles in her final 36 holes as she carded a three-over 75 in the second round and grinded her way to a 79 in the final round to post a 222 54-hole total. After holding the tournament lead after 36-holes, Schmucker would finish as the runner-up to Maryland's Katie Stepanek who fired a three-over 75 in the final round to take medalist honors with a 219 total (73-71-75).

Schmucher was named the Big Ten Conference's Golfer of the Week Thursday, March 9 after she won her second collegiate tournament at the 2006 Rio Verde Collegiate (March 2-4). A senior, Amy was selected to be an invited individual participant for the 2006 NCAA Central Regional. She was one of just three individuals invited to play in the Central Regional, joining Illinois State's Samantha Richdale and Kansas' Amanda Costner.

GYMNASTICS

Coach Bev Plocki’s gymnastics team started the season ranked #5 in the pre-season coaches poll. It ended the season at the NCAA Championships in Corvallis Oregon, placing fourth place out of six, 0.175 points away from third place Utah and a birth in the Super-Six.

Earlier, at the Big Ten Women's Gymnastics Championships in East Lansing, UM finished somewhere other than atop the podium for the first time in eight seasons as the Wolverines placed fourth, losing to Minnesota, the only school other than Michigan that has won a Big Ten title since 1992 (the Gophers also won in 1988).

Riding a Big Ten winning streak that stretched 24 meets, U-M suffered a horrible twist of fate on the balance beam, witnessing four gymnasts fall and knocking themselves out of the title chase. Despite a strong finish on the floor exercise, Michigan was only able to secure fourth place, failing to win the championships for only the second time in 15 years.

Three Wolverines won or shared five Big Ten individual titles, led by a pair of crowns each for junior Carol McNamara (Hastings, Minn./Hastings) and junior Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus). McNamara earned her titles with a tie on vault and a solo win on the floor exercise, while Bruck won beam and the all-around. Sophomore Katie Lieberman (Lake Forest, Ill./Lake Forest) shared the vault title, giving her back-to-back vault crowns at Big Tens.

Michigan hosted the NCAA Northeast Regional at Crisler Arena on Saturday, April 8th. A win there earned Michigan its 15th straight trip to the NCAA Regional Championships.

Junior Lindsey Bruck (Marietta, N.Y./Marcellus) of the University of Michigan women's gymnastics team recently earned her fourth Big Ten Gymnast of the Week honor this year, announced by the conference office on March 22nd.

Bruck closed out the regular season with her third all-around title of the year, posting a 39.375, while also winning her third beam title of the 2006 season with a season-high-tying 9.900 against in-state rival Michigan State on March 17th in Crisler Arena.

Freshman Tatjana Thuener-Rego (Miami,Fla./American) and senior Jenny Deiley (Dayton, Minn./Elk River) have also earned weekly honors for the Wolverines this season, bringing the Wolverines' 2006 total to six weekly honors.

ROWING

The University of Michigan women's rowing team started off its fall season with a trio of head races against Eastern Michigan, Michigan State and Notre Dame on Sunday (Sept. 18) on Belleville Lake. The Wolverines, Spartans and Fighting Irish boated three eights with the EMU Eagles sending out two. Michigan's third eight was victorious in the first two 3,000-meter pieces before finishing second to MSU's first eight in the third piece. Stroke limits for the day were set at 25 strokes per minute.

Against Ohio State, U-M had two eights and one four while OSU had two eights and a pair of fours. There were five total pieces for the eights and the fours. Each piece lasted five minutes and the stroke limit was set at 25 strokes per minute.

In the eights races each of the four crews won at least one race. In the races between the fours the Wolverines finished first all five times.

The University of Michigan women's rowing team received a seventh-place finish from its varsity eight crew in the Women's Championship Eight division at the 41st annual Head of the Charles on Sunday (Oct. 23). The Wolverines' four placed ninth overall in the Women's Championship Four division. Both finishes were identical to those from U-M at the 2004 Head of the Charles regatta.

With a time of 17:25.970, the varsity eight finished fourth among its collegiate counterparts. The Wolverines' four was the sixth U.S. college boat to cross the finish line, clocking in at 20:03.128.

The University of Michigan women's rowing team wrapped up its fall varsity season Saturday (Oct. 29) with head racing on the St. Joseph River against Notre Dame and Michigan State. The course was set at 4,200 meters. Michigan boated two varsity eights, two varsity fours and three novice crews.

Michigan State's crews finished one-two in the varsity eight race with its "A" crew clocking in at 14:03.4. The Spartan "B" shell crossed the finish line in 14:15.1. The Wolverine "A" crew was third overall in 14:17.1. Notre Dame finished fourth and fifth, while Michigan's "B" boat was sixth in 14:48.1.

Seven boats competed in the varsity four event. MSU's two crews were first and second in the race, finishing with times of 16:06.6 and 16:32.1. Michigan's first finisher crossed the line in 16:46.3, while Notre Dame's "C" crew turned in a time of 16:48.0. Notre Dame's "B" and "A" boats placed fifth and sixth, respectively, with times of 16:54.8 and 16:58.0. Michigan's other shell was seventh in the race in 17:03.7.

The No. 7 University of Michigan women's rowing team began its 2006 spring season on Saturday (March 25) with third-place finishes by its first and second varsity eights against No. 1 Princeton and No. 6 Brown.

The first varsity eight race was won easily by the Princeton Tigers in a time of 7:00.9. Brown was second (7:10.2), more than nine seconds of the leader's pace, and the Wolverines were third in a time of 7:21.1.

The winning margin was much narrower in second varsity eight sprint. The Bears earned first in 7:25.1, beating Princeton (7:27.5) by more than a half length. The Maize and Blue crew crossed the finish line in 7:34.0.

SOCCER

Michigan closed the season with an 8-9-4 overall; 3-6-1 Big Ten record, reaching the finals of the Big Ten tournament.

Seeded #8 going into the tournament, the Wolverines took on top-seeded Penn State and played them to a 3-3 tie after 100 minutes of action; then outscored the Nittany Lions 4-2 in the penalty kicks tiebreaker to advance to the semifinals of the Big Ten Tournament at the U-M Soccer Field.

In the semifinals vs. Illinois, Michigan junior Judy Coffman scored on a free kick with 22:50 left in the game to give the Michigan women’s soccer team a 2-1 win.

In the championship game, Michigan took on Wisconsin, coming up short in a 3-1 loss to the Badgers. Heavy winds stifled the U-M offense, continually pushing the ball away from its offensive side of the field in the second half.

Sophomore Melissa Dobbyn led the team in scoring, amassing 32 points for the season, scoring 12 goals and contributing 8 assists. Senior Therese Heaton was a close second with 28 points on 11 goals and 6 assists. Heaton’s 80 career points are the 4th highest in program history.

Dobbyn was selected All-Big Ten first team, while freshman Skylar Andrews was named to the second team. In addition, both Andres and fellow freshman Danelle Underwood garnered all-freshman league honors.

Heaton and junior Lindsey Cottrell garnered CoSIDA Academic All-Districe IV honors, with Heaton gaining first team honors while Cottrell earned second team honors.

Also, the Michigan women’s soccer program earned 4 individual and 1 team award from the National Soccer Coaches Association of America. Dobbyn (All-Great Lakes Region second team); junior Katelin Spencer(Scholar All-Central Region first team); Coffman and Heaton(scholar All-Central Region second team). In addition, the Wolverines were awarded the Women’s Collegiate Team Academic Award for posting a team grade point average over 3.0. Finally, the team had 15 student-athletes earn selection to the Big Ten Fall Academic All-Big Ten team.

SOFTBALL

On Saturday, May 6th, Michigan Softball (35-13) closes out the Big Ten schedule at arch rival Michigan State. The Wolverines have a slim chance of catching the league-leading Northwestern Wildcats. If NW losses two final games to Illinois and UM wins both of its games, the Wolverines could tie for the Big Ten Title.

In a win over Eastern Michigan on May 3rd, Michigan closed out its home season and four superb seniors played their last game at Alumni Field: Jennie Ritter, Grace Leutele, Stephanie Bercaw and Becky Marx. They will be missed. Jennie Ritter finished her career number two on the UM all time wins list. Ritter has 89 victories. The win over Eastern Michigan marked Coach Carol (Hutch) Hutchins 975th victory (952 at UM).

Early in the 2006 season, the 2005 NCAA Division I softball champions faced its toughest opponent, UCLA On March 15th, in a rematch of last year’s NCAA Championship Series, the Wolverines played at UCLA in a nationally-televised game on ESPN2, losing a 10-inning heartbreaker 6-4. Senior pitcher Jennie Ritter posted a 4-0 record with 1 save, tallying a .50 ERA and striking out 54 to earn Big Ten Pitcher of the Week honors.

SWIMMING AND DIVING

The Michigan swimming and diving team finished 3rd in the Big Ten Championships in Columbus, OH. Junior Kaitlyn Brady won 5 events, concluding one of U of M’s all-time greatest conference seasons and earning her 2006 Big Ten Conference Swimmer of the Year and Big Ten Swimmer of the Championships awards. Brady won individual championships in the 50 yard freestyle, 100 yard butterfly, and the 200 yard backstroke, and then was on the winning 200 yard freestyle relay and 400 yard medley relay. Junior Lindsey Smith took home 3 firsts in the 200 yard freestyle, 200 yard freestyle relay and 400 yard medley relay. Sophomore Justine Mueller won 2 events, the 200 yard individual medley and the 400 yard medley relay. Freshman Payton Johnson, freshman Hannah Smith and senior Abby Seskevics each were champions in 1 event; Johnson in the 400 yard medley relay and Smith and Seskevics in the 200 yard freestyle relay. All 6 swimmers were selected to the All-Big Ten First Team.

U of M took 17th place at the NCAA Championships in Athens, GA. Brady placed 5th in the 100 yard butterfly; and the 200 yard freestyle relay team of Brady, Seskevics, Hannah Smith and Lindsey Smith placed 8th in the 200 yard freestyle relay to earn All-American honors.

TENNIS

The women’s tennis team had a successful (16-7) season despite being tripped up by perennial champion Northwestern in the Big Ten Final. Then for the fifth consecutive season, the Wolverines received a bid to the 2006 Division I NCAAA Championships which starts May 12th.

2006 season highlights include a non-conference win over #22 Tennessee, and Big Ten Conference-opening wins over Michigan State and Wisconsin. In the match against Northwestern, Debra Streifler and Kara Delicata upset the nation’s No.7-ranked doubles team.

The team is comprised of seniors Debra Streifler and Nina Yaftali; juniors Kara Delicata and Elizabeth Exon, sophomores Allie Shafner and Monica Sly; and freshmen Lindsey Howard and Chisako Sugiyanma.

On June 1st, after 22 years at the helm, Tennis Head Coach Bitsy Ritt leaves to become UM’s Associate Athletic Director. In her new role, she’ll oversee 22 Olympic sports. During her whole career, she never had a scholarship student transfer and she had 29 Academic All Big-Ten players, including 3 Big Ten Players of the year. She was named Coach of the Year three times. Best of all, Coach Ritt’s team won its last home game this season against Indiana. MWomen looks forward to working with Coach Ritt in her new role.

The U of M women’s track team won the Big Ten Indoor team title for the 4th time in 5 years. Alyson Kohlmeier, Emily Webster, and Rebecca Walter went 1-2-3 in the 5,000 meter run, while Katie Erdman claimed her 3rd career 600 meter crown and Nicole Edwards won the mile. Webster and Walter also went 1-2 in the 3,000 meter race. Finally, the Distance Medley Relay team of Kohlmeier, Amber Hay, Geena Gall, and Erdman also took home a championship. She led the team and finished 5th in the Big Ten regular season with 4.00 kills per game while adding 2.41 digs per game and leading the team with 30 aces. Bruzdzinski became the second-fastest Wolverine to reach the 500 kill mark, completing the feat in just 42 matches.

The team had 6 players selected to the Fall Academic All-Big Ten team: Ashley Buckinham, Erin Cobler, Sarah Draves, Candace Gay, Lyndsay Miller and Stesha Selsky.

Featuring Women’s Gymnastics Head Coach Bev Plocki

In her 17 years as head coach, Bev Plocki has set a high bar for others to cross. Her Wolverines have dominated the Big Ten Conference for 13 of 15 seasons. They are one of just five programs in the country to advance to the last 14 NCAA Championships. She recruits and develops great individual talent, too. Her athletes have won more than 113 NCAA All-America honors & six NCAA individual national titles. With teams like this, it’s no wonder she has drawn record crowds to Crisler (4th best in the nation). Plocki has been highly honored by her peers: 8-time Big Ten Coach of the Year; 4-time NCAA Regional Coach of the Year; and 1994 NCAA National Coach of the Year. M-Women is very proud to have Bev Plocki address its 2006 Annual Meeting!
