State, county, and city populations
The Office of Financial Management (OFM) develops population estimates each year as of April 1 for
release in July. OFM has prepared these estimates every year for more than five decades for use by
many state laws that allocate funds, determine program eligibility, and establish county participation
under the Growth Management Act, among many other uses.
The state will use 2024 population estimates beginning January 2025 (RCW 36.13.100, 43.62.020,
43.62.030, 66.08.200, and 66.08.210).
Statewide population trends
The April 1, 2024, population estimate is 8,035,700. The population increased by 329,390 people (from
births, deaths, and net migration) from the 2020 census, OFM-adjusted base. The annual population
growth rate is about the same as last year at 1.1%.

Migration
Migration continues to be the primary driver behind population growth. From 2023 to 2024, net
migration (people moving in minus people moving out) to Washington totaled 69,100, which is down
3,300 people compared to 2023¡¯s net migration number. Net migration accounted for 82% of the
state¡¯s population growth, with natural change (births minus deaths) responsible for the other 18%.
