SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

SCIENCE OLYMPIAD

Friendship Christian School

This challenging program teaches all major fields of science, as well as multiple hands-on engineering and laboratory events.  It is an outstanding program emphasizing the application of that which is learned in the classroom.  The middle school program is designed to challenge at a high school level, and the high school program is designed to prepare the team members for collegiate level science and scientific careers.  Practices begin in October and competitions run from November through May.  The middle school is scheduled to compete in six competitions and high school in five (in Georgia, Ohio, and Tennessee).  Additionally, Tennessee’s state champion represents the state in May at the national competition.  This year, the state competition will be held at the University of Tennessee and nationals will be held at Augusta State University in Augusta, GA.

In Friendship Christian School's sixth year of competing in Science Olympiad, this site is prepared to provide a tool for team members, their families, and other interested persons to track our progress, schedule, etc..., and provide easy access to much-needed information throughout the year.

From here, you will be able to link to various sites that will include a middle school team page, a high school team page, and several other sites of local and national interest (states to which we will be traveling).

In 2008, Friendship had another outstanding year.  The teams attended the Vol State Regional tournament for the first time and dominated the field.  The three middle school teams combined to win 17 of the 23 events, and they finished first, second, and fourth at the regional.  The high school team, down to just nine of the fourteen members due to illness and Winterfest, finished as the third place team.  The HS team still managed to win five events, and each of the nine team members walked away with at least one gold medal.  Additionally, the HS team earned a 4th place finish at the JP2 invitational in Hendersonville.  The MS team again qualified for the state tournament and matched their best ever finish as the 2008 state runner-up.  The team had five gold-medal events, five silver-medal finishes, and three bronze medal placements.

2008 also saw the formation of an Elementary Science Olympiad team.  In fact, two FCS teams, totaling 35 4th-6th graders, traveled to Murfreesboro to compete in Middle Tennessee's first ever elementary competition.  Twenty teams participated as both Friendship and Middle Tennessee attempt to develop strong S.O. programs.  The day was a great success as the students were introduced to what Science Olympiad is all about, and each of the 35 FCS students came home with a medal.  What a great beginning for these future Science Olympiad stars!

In 2007, it was a year of firsts for Friendship.  For the first time, FCS had a top-10 team finish at an Ohio invitational.  In fact, that first time feat was matched in each of the three Ohio trips.  Friendship also won its regional tournament for the first time and its three teams finished first, third, and fifth out of 14 teams.  The high school team had a fifth place finish, one spot shy of a return trip to state.  The middle school was second in the state as a team at the State Tournament in Knoxville, finishing just eleven points behind eighteen time champion Bearden Middle of Knoxville.  Last year, FCS was 46 points out and in third place.  FCS was also invited to make their first appearance at the national tournament, hosted by Wichita State University in Kansas.  There were sixty middle schools invited from across the country.  Each one was either the state champion or runner-up in their state.  Friendship finished 33rd out of the 60 teams at the national tournament, an excellent finish in their first year at the national tournament, and just their fourth year of participation in Science Olympiad.

In 2006, both our Middle School team and High School team qualified out of the Middle Tennessee Region to compete at the State Competition on the UT-Knoxville campus.  The Middle School team came home with a third place team finish in the state and both teams came home with multiple medals.  Friendship Christian School claimed a state championship in Science of Fitness (MS) and was the state runner-up in seven more events (4 MS, 3 HS).  The middle school team was the top finishing middle school team from Middle Tennessee, beating out highly recognized academic schools, such as Montgomery Bell Academy, Martin Luthur King Magnet School, and the McFadden School of Excellence.  Overall, 20 of the 29 FCS students who competed at the State Competition earned at least one medal (first, second, or third place finish in the state).

Our 2004 Middle School team had finished fifth in the state and had earned state championships in Mission Possible, Life Science Lab, and Science Crime Busters.  Our 2005 Middle School team finished third in the state, and our first-year, high school team finished eighth.  Together, they claimed state championships in Mission Possible (MS), Forestry (MS), and Forensics (HS).

Hoping to build on that success, FCS added a second Middle School team for 2005-06.  Also, for the first time, sixth graders had the opportunity to compete on Friendship's teams, allowing them an extra year of participation in preparation for the future.

For the 2006-07 school year, FCS added a third Middle School team as more and more students express an interest in participating in Science Olympiad!  With 26 returning Middle School students, a third team was necessary to allow many new team members to join.

In addition to facing many of the nation's top Science Olympiad schools at invitationals, such as Booth Middle School in Georgia, and Solon Middle and Solon High Schools in Ohio, FCS competed against some of Middle Tennessee's biggest and most prestigious schools.  At the Middle Tennessee Regional in February, Friendship has competed against Montgomery Bell Academy, Martin Luthur King, Siegel, Smyrna, Franklin, Harpeth Hall, Hume-Fogg, Oakland, Riverdale, and others.
