First LastTeacherClass13 April 2013TitleNO CAPS LIKE THISDouble spaced paragraphs Document margins should be all 1 inchNo underlining everDo not use numbers less than 100 in writing. Write it out. No 4, 35, 99 NoTimes New Roman 12 font black is the only thing you will ever use. Anything else is an F.Almost never use italics. Only when you are really stressing the importance of a word.New paragraphs look like this. No extra spaces. One tab over. When using a source, introduce the author and the source you got it from first. Anything else will be plagiarism. Do not use random quotes without an introduction or an explanation. Do not use quotes as the last sentence of a paragraph. You must explain the quote. No excuses. Ex: In Taylor Branch’s article, "The Shame of College Sports," Branch makes a comment about the money that can be made easily by bigger schools. “In 2010, despite the faltering economy, a single college athletic league, the football-crazed Southeastern Conference (SEC), became the first to crack the billion-dollar barrier in athletic receipts. The Big Ten pursued closely at $905 million” (Branch). Then Explain why this is important to your point. Quotes longer than 4 lines need to be a block quote. Only one block quote per essay. Ex: “In 2010, despite the faltering economy, a single college athletic league, the football-crazed Southeastern Conference (SEC), became the first to crack the billion-dollar barrier in athletic receipts. The Big Ten pursued closely at $905 million” (Branch)No sources ever in the intro…never. An intro needs to “hook” the reader. Get the reader interested and informed on what your paper will be over. The thesis will be near the end if not the last sentence of the intro and will define your points (typically 3) and state your claim. All paragraphs need transition sentences to make it flow. All paragraphs need a topic sentence, as the first sentence, to explain the point of that paragraph. All paragraphs need to directly relate to the thesis statement. Paragraphs need to be ordered in the same order as they came in the thesis sentence. Transitional paragraphs are welcome. They add background, better flow in your paper, and most importantly length. Never ever use informal language such as: you, I, don’t, can’t, won’t. No contractions ever! Conclusions should be thought provoking and leave your reader with something to think about. If you are trying to prove a point then make sure it is made. If you are offering a solution to a problem then make sure that solution is clear.Work CitedBranch, Taylor.
