Tanveer Miah UCAS Personal Statement 2.docx.docx

My family first purchased a computer system in 2001, this is when I first had access to a personal computer and I got to see how it was set up and configured. It was a pre-assembled desktop computer with Windows Me installed on it and I was made to watch enviously as my older brother set it up and configured its settings and software. I always felt that being allowed to set up, install and configure such expensive hardware would be fun, and as I got older, computers and IT-related technology began to take up a significant amount of my leisure time. I eventually realised it was a topic of great interest to me and I have pursued learning as much as I can about computers ever since. Consequently, I feel my strong passion for the subject and college studies have created the perfect foundation to develop my IT skills further with a BSc Computer Science degree.

My networking course has taught me that computing has been used as part of every organization and for many types of technology development. It is clear that computer technologies are integrated in every aspect of modern life and I want to be a part of the rapid development of this phenomenon.

When I first started my BTEC networking course I thought I had enough knowledge for basic network management and IT-related topics, but the course has shed more light on the topic than I ever knew existed, emphasizing the vast scale of all there is to learn about computing and networking technologies. Within the eighteen units I completed in my networking course, two of these units are Cisco units which have given me very useful networking skills. I am enthused by how networks are formed and structured and I also like how they can be dynamic and improved as well as adapted to suit different purposes and functionalities. Before I started this Level 3 course I had prior information of binary related work playing a small part of my course and a major part of computer science degrees; I was afraid I would not be able to understand the binary language, but soon I began to break it down and understand it well; I found this process challenging and rewarding.

Work experience within Highfield Nursery gave me the chance to interact with small children and their ideas on computers. Furthermore, I witnessed how the nursery staff use ICT in their day-to-day job roles and got to see how the computing and networking is set up there. Of the four IT staff, only one of them (the network administrator and manager) was earning a salary above the average and had immense advanced IT knowledge and experience; I was able to observe the manager handle complex IT tasks and problems which his colleagues within the same department were not able to do. Witnessing the use of such skills in a real-life job role gave me inspiration for furthering my interests in IT.

Other than computers and IT, during my free time I like to engage in sports like football with friends.. I also like to play many different types of video games across varying genres and video game consoles. I listen to a lot of American hip hop rap music, though I look for intelligent lyrics more than catchy choruses; some rappers are able to present stories and funny, emotional and interesting content in an imaginative way which I take pleasure in listening to.

I have been reading books since a very young age, including many fictional fantasy action and adventure books. This includes the Lord of The Rings and Harry Potter series’; and though not relatable to my life experiences, Harry Potter books transport me to an interesting fictional world which I just find so fun to read.

Good IT job roles require more than simply a university qualification; they require a lot of actual life experience and a lot of independent research. I am always dedicated to what I am interested in, and always trying to learn new things; I want to go beyond and achieve as many additional skills and qualifications as I can to fully equip myself to use at university and beyond.
