This course meets the General Education requirement, Area B, for the Associate of Arts and Associate of Science degrees and for the transfer pattern for UC/CSU. It is designed to enable students to validate conclusions, read accurately and critically, express thoughts precisely and solve problems.

Precalculus Mathematics

I. Catalog Description

MATH 26, Precalculus Mathematics 3 units

This course, which prepares the students for calculus, covers trigonometry and college algebra. (CAN MATH 16)

II. Expected Outcomes for Students

Upon successful completion of this course students should be able to perform the following activities with 70% accuracy.

A. Graph polynomials, inverse, rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions.

B. Solve trigonometric equations and prove trigonometric identities.

C. Solve triangles using the law of sines and cosines.

D. Perform operations with complex numbers.

E. Solve systems of equations and inequalities.

F. Find zeros of polynomials.

G. Prove identities by mathematical induction.

H. Find the terms and sum of an arithmetic or geometric series.

I. Use the binomial theorem.

J. Solve problems using the remainder and factor theorems.

K. Find partial fractions.
