MLA Works Cited Documentation

Note:  These citations serve as examples of how to format entries on Works Cited pages of student research papers.  These examples may or may not be actual published literary works, and you should not be disappointed if the internet web site URLs are not functional.  Again, this page is simply a set of examples to help you format a paper written in MLA style.

When creating your Works Cited Page, remember to:

• Begin the Works Cited on a new page, but number consecutively (i.e., if the last page of your essay is page 3, the Works Cited is page 4)

• Alphabetize each entry by first letter

• Indent the 2nd line, the 3rd line, and all subsequent lines of each citation

• Double-space all entries...the examples which follow are single-spaced only to save space on this handout

SUMMARY

DIRECTIONS: Read your author’s work(s) in your lit book. If your work is an essay, summarize the work paragraph by paragraph (two paragraphs). If your work is a short story, novel, or play, summarize the work through a plot sequence (in first paragraph discuss setting, characters, and vital character descriptions; in the second paragraph discuss the rising action, climax, and resolution). If your work is a long poem, summarize line by line or stanza by stanza (two paragraphs). If your works are two short poems, summarize the first poem line by line or stanza by stanza in paragraph one; summarize the second poem line by line or stanza by stanza in paragraph two. The paragraphs should be six to eight sentences. Since this is in your own words, you should not have to parenthetically document except at the end of each paragraph.

Suggested topic sentence for paragraph 1: One of HIS/HER well-known works is TITLE HERE. You will need to determine your own topic sentence for paragraph 2.

ANALYSIS

DIRECTIONS: Look at the questions which you answered from pages 9 and 10. Choose one question to develop into a full paragraph. Follow this format:

1) In order to create HIS/HER work, AUTHOR’S LAST NAME relied on several literary elements. One of the most important elements is WORK TITLE is LITERARY ELEMENT.

2) Define the word you have chosen using your literary glossary.

3) Restate the questions you have chosen to answer.

4) Answer the questions briefly in one to two sentences.

5) Quote text which supports your answer. Provide appropriate documentation.

6) Explain how quote and answer relate.

Choose another question to develop into a second full paragraph. Follow the above format except change the topic sentence to read: Another important literary element in WORK TITLE is LITERARY ELEMENT.

CONCLUSION

DIRECTIONS: Write a concluding paragraph which summarizes the paper. Paragraph should be four to six sentences. You do not have to parenthetically document UNLESS you introduce new information.

Works Cited

DIRECTIONS: Your works cited should include a full reference to each work cited in your paper. The first line of each source should be against the margin; indent the second and each subsequent line of the source. Put your sources in ABC order.
