FAMOUS FRENCH /FRENCH-SPEAKING PERSON

ORAL PRESENTATION

(200 points)

1. Format:

• This project is an oral presentation and it must be done individually.

• You will need to provide evidence of valid research about your famous person using the required online databases only.

• You will answer 5 questions about your famous person which you will present orally to the class. (including an introduction and a conclusion) This is your writing piece.

• You will do a visual about your famous person either: a movie, a power point or a poster. It must be in color and well illustrated with pictures. This is your visual piece.

2. Essential Question:

• What have YOU learned about your famous person based on your research and selected questions?

3. Writing Piece

1. Introduction/Opening

• Full name of your famous person (Ex. I did my biography project on…)

• Date of birth

• Date of death if applicable

• Birthplace (city + country)

• 3 to 4 sentences introducing your famous person (some key facts about his/her life)

2. Body/5 questions total

• 2 required questions

• 3 questions of your choice from the list of supplementary questions

3. Conclusion/Closing

• Your personal opinion on your famous person in your own words

• Something valuable that you learned from the person he/she was (is)

• The importance of his/her accomplishments/achievements

and why you think this way (I think …)

During your oral presentation:

• You will have 7 flashcards total. Number each one in order from 1- 7.

• WRITE YOUR NAME ON FLASHCARD #1.

• You may handwrite neatly with a pen or type.

• ALL FLASHCARDS WILL BE COLLECTED AT THE END OF YOUR ORAL PRESENTION.

• You will have your flashcards with you when you present but make sure you do not “just read” them.

• You must put some life into what you are reading.

• You must glance occasionally at your audience.

4. Visual Piece

• Movie, Power Point or poster (regular size/NAME ON BACK OF POSTER)

• Must have a picture of your famous person and pictures of his/her life and achievements (inventions, scientific breakthroughs, works of art, books written etc…)

• Must be colorful, creative and eye catching

• NO WRITING ON THE VISUAL EXCEPT FOR:

- THE NAME OF YOUR FAMOUS PERSON

- CAPTIONS UNDER PICTURES/ MUST BE TYPED

- TITLE FOR EACH SLIDE OF POWER POINT

• RESEARCH ARTICLES AND PICTURES MUST BE CITED (LAST SLIDE/ BACK OF POSTER)

5. Grading

• LMS Oral Presentation School Wide Rubric

• Must be handed in the day you present (or minus 2 points)

• Write your name, period and the name of your famous person on the rubric.

• You must rehearse/practice prior to the day of your oral presentation.

• Project itself is worth 200 points.

6. Doing Research

• You will have 2 class periods to do your research in the library/large group room.

• You must have picked your famous person from the list and have it approved by the teacher prior to doing your research.

• Go to the LMS Library Page.

• Click on World Languages on left-hand side.

• There are 3 links for the 3 required online databases:

- Gale Biography in Context Password: lincolnmid

- World Book Online (Special Sites, World Book Discover, Find by Topic, People & Biographies)

Important Note

• You may also use World Book Student if you need additional information.

7. Research Articles

• You must have 3 research articles from a valid source.

• Each research article must be minimum 2 pages long and must include the source citation.

• ALL RESEARCH ARTICLES WITH CITATION HIGHLIGHTED MUST BE HANDED IN WHEN YOU TURN IN YOUR TAKE-HOME QUIZ.

• WRITE YOUR NAME ON THE FIRST RESEARCH ARTICLE.

8. Writing Worksheet

• All your writing will be handwritten on the worksheet provided. It will serve as your draft.

• You will have the opportunity to peer-edit your draft in class.

• Write your introduction and conclusion on the Opening-Closing worksheet.

• Write your paragraph for each of the 5 questions on the Biography Questions Answer worksheet.

9. Role of the Audience/Listeners

• As an audience member you will be required to write 1 question on a slip for each presenter after he/she has finished his/her oral presentation.

• The question must be appropriate and must be on the famous person’s achievements or an important event in his/her life.

• A good question will start with the question word: “Why…?”

Important

Questions such as: “Does he have any siblings?” is not based on the person’s

achievements and therefore is not an appropriate question.

YOU WILL LOSE 3 POINTS OFF YOUR FINAL GRADE AFTER 2

OR MORE INAPPROPRIATE QUESTIONS.

ALL SLIPS WILL BE COLLECTED AFTER EACH PRESENTATION AND

GIVEN TO THE PRESENTER.

• YOU MUST BE QUIET, ATTENTIVE AND RESPECTFUL DURING EACH ORAL PRESENTATION.

• TALKING DURING AN ORAL PRESENTATION WILL RESULT IN TAKING

5 POINTS OFF YOUR FINAL GRADE.

10. Take- Home Quiz for Each Presenter

• Presenter’s Take-Home Quiz Sheet: You will answer 2 questions of your choice from the slips collected that day.

• You must choose 2 questions you haven’t already answered during your oral presentation.

• You will be graded in this manner: 100, 95, 85, 75, 65, 60 or below.

• TAKE-HOME QUIZ DUE THE DAY AFTER YOUR ORAL PRESENTATION.

• YOUR TAKE-HOME QUIZ WILL COUNT AS A QUIZ GRADE.

• You will lose 5 points for EACH DAY IT IS LATE.

• You must turn in your 3 research articles with your Take-Home Quiz.

• Source Citation must be clearly circled or highlighted on each research article.

• You must turn in all the slips you received with the 2 slips you selected on top of the stack.

BIOGRAPHY PROJECT QUESTIONS

Required Questions

You must answer these 2 questions:

1. How did he/she achieve his/her fame? = What made him/her famous?

You must elaborate by giving specific details on at least 2 achievements. Briefly describe in your own words.

2. What impact did his/her achievements have on their own society and the world at large? Was your famous person recognized for his/her achievements?

Did he/she receive any awards?

Supplementary Questions List

Choose 3 questions to answer:

1. In what ways is his/her life remarkable? (worthy of attention)

2. In what ways is his/her life despicable? (worthy of being hated)

3. Is your famous person someone you would look up to? Why? (at least 2 reasons)

4. Which personal quality or trait of your famous person proved most helpful for his/her success?

5. Which personal quality or trait of your famous person proved most difficult for his/her success?

6. Did your famous person make any major mistakes or bad decisions? If so, what were they and how would you have reacted if you would have been in his/her shoes?

7. What are the two or three most important lessons you or any young person might learn from the way your famous person lived his/her life?

8. An older person or mentor is often important in shaping the lives of gifted people by providing guidance and encouragement. Did your famous person have a mentor and how did that mentor shape him/her? Explain.

9. Many people act out of pressures from society or a set of beliefs which dictate their choices. To what extent did your famous person act according to a norm or act independently?
