COURSE OUTLINE

PY 207- Life-Span Developmental Psychology C-3, Cr-3

Course Description: 

This course explores the changes that take place in human development from conception to death. Cognitive, emotional, social, and physical developments are covered at each chronological stage. Emphasis is placed on biological and environmental influences across the life-span.

Prerequisite: PY101 Introduction to General Psychology. Students who have successfully completed PY202 Childhood and Adolescence and/or PY205 Adulthood and Aging may not take PY207 Life-Span Developmental Psychology.

Course Objectives: 

At the conclusion of this course, the student will be able to: 

1. Use developmental theories to analyze historical and current issues, as well as trends in lifespan psychology.

2. Compare and contrast the research methods employed by developmental psychologists across the lifespan.

3. Compare and contrast the historical and current issues in the study across the lifespan, and the impact of current developmental theories relating to issues across the lifespan.

4. Differentiate the stages and important milestones in typical development that have an effect on developmental issues across the lifespan.

5. Apply major developmental theories to the analysis of psychopathologies associated with the lifespan using the contributions of major developmental theorists such as Freud, Piaget, Bowlby, Ainsworth, Erikson, Kohlberg, Levinson, Brofenbrener, and Fowler etc.

6. Using developmental theories analyze the changes that occur in perceptual, cognitive, language, emotional, personality, and social processes during the lifespan.

7. Analyze the biological changes associated with the aging process and their effect on the other developmental domains.

8. Compare and contrast theories relating to death and dying.

9. Using theory and critical thinking to analyze the effects and influence of culture, parenting styles and family structure on adult development.

10. Compare and contrast adult development data with normative adult developmental.

11. Analyze the changes as well as the stabilities in the developmental domains across the life-span.

12. Utilize developmental research findings to clarify lifespan issues.

13. Apply developmental theories to real-life case studies from diverse populations according to life span.
