Biological Classification Worksheet

Grouping living things into similar groups

– Currently all living things are divided into 3 groups called Domains. These 3 Domains are the:

– 1) Archaea ( like bacteria, no peptidoglycan) includes Kingdom Archaebacteria

– 2) Bacteria – includes Kingdom Bacteria

– 3) Eukarya – includes Kingdoms Protista, Fungi, Plantae, and Animalia

– The 3 Domains are then split into smaller and smaller groups. After Domain comes Kingdom, then Phylum, Class, Order, Family, Genus and ending with the smallest but most similar called Species.

– Living things are then “named” by their Genus and Species much like we have a first and last name. The two part naming system is called Binomial Nomenclature. That name is always italicized or underlined. It is “universal”, the same in every language.

The classification of humans- Homo sapiens

Kingdom: Animalia

Phylum: Chordata

Class: Mammalia

Order: Primata

Family: Hominadae

Genus: Homo

Species: sapiens (Species is never capitalized)

Using the information above, answer the following questions.

2) What is the smallest classification group? _____________________

3) Every living organism has what classification groups as its name? __________

and _______________.

4) The first letter of every genus name is _______________.

5) The first letter of every species name is _______________.

6) What is binomial nomenclature? _________________________________________________________

7) Give one example of how classification is used at school (other than fresh/soph/junior/senior). _____________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________

8) Why is the understanding of classification an important life skill? ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________
