Survey of the Human Body- BIO105-SUNY Mandated Curriculum

Survey of biological chemistry, cell structure and function, tissues and organ systems of the human body, and genetics.

Course Goals:

Upon completion of the course the student will have a basic understanding of the field of Biology, including:

1. An understanding of the basic chemistry of life.

2. A knowledge of the basic processes and energetics of living organisms, including cellular metabolism.

3. An understanding of cell structure and function, and cell reproduction.

4. A detailed knowledge of the four tissue types.

5. An understanding of the different biological systems of the human body.

6. A basic understanding of the function of DNA and genetics

Course Objectives:

By means of lectures, laboratory exercises, demonstrations and readings, the students will be able to:

1. Explain and describe the major organic molecules that living organisms are composed of.

2. Explain, interpret and integrate the concepts of matter and energy as they relate to the functions of biological systems.

3. Describe cell structure and function of both prokaryotic and eukaryotic organisms.

4. Explain and interpret the idea that DNA and its related molecules (The Central Dogma) is sufficient to explain the physical and chemical functioning of a living system.

5. Describe systems for nutrient acquisition, digestion, gas exchange, internal transport, osmoregulation, and excretion in the human body.

6. Explain the maintenance of homeostasis through biofeedback mechanisms.

7. Analyze the intricacies of neural control and effectors in the evolutionary progression from unicellular organisms to the human species.

8. Understand the physiological and biochemical mechanisms of hormonal control in

growth, development and regulatory processes in the human body..

9. Explain differences and functions of the male and female reproductive systems in

Humans.

10. Use the scientific method to perform laboratory experiments, collect and analyze

biological data.
