HOW TO FIND THE FULL-TEXT JOURNAL ARTICLE

IN SEARCH OF THE FULL-TEXT JOURNAL ARTICLE: A PATHWAY TO FOLLOW

This document will outline paths you can follow to determine if an article is available in full-text electronic format from HSLS. Subscriptions to the full-text electronic products are purchased from various providers, and this results in different ways of accessing these resources. Thus, the pathways to locate this literature will not necessarily be linear.

Journal Case Study:

You want to read an article published in the journal: BIOMARKERS. 7(6): 451-63, 2002 Nov-Dec.

The paths you can take to determine if the article is available as a full-text document are outlined below.

1. E-Journals List (hsls.pitt.edu/resources/ejournals/titles)

All the electronic titles subscribed to by HSLS are listed, with links to full-text. Most, but not all, of the bioscience titles will be on this list.

BIOMARKERS is not on this list.

2. PITTCat for the Health Sciences (). The PITTCat library catalog includes all the electronic journals subscribed to by the University of Pittsburgh, including full-text journals that are not on the HSLS E-Journals list. This is the most authoritative source of E-Journal information.

• From the PITTCat screen:

• In the box “Search Terms:” enter the journal’s title.

• In the box “Search Type:” select “Journal Title Begins with”.

• In the box “Search Limit:” select “All Electronic Resources”.

• From the PITTCat record there is a link to the electronic journal.

• BIOMARKERS can be located using PITTCat.

• If the journal being searched is not held by any Pitt library, the PITTCat screen will state, “PITTCat found no records that matched your search”.

3. Ovid A search of Ovid MEDLINE identified this same article, published in the Nov-Dec 2002 issue of BIOMARKERS.

• There is no “Full-Text” link from the article record.

o This means that HSLS does not offer a full-text version of this journal from the Ovid platform.

o However, a full-text version may be located by using a different pathway.

• In this case the path to take is through the “Library Holdings” link in the article record. (See figure #1)

• The “Library Holdings” link connects to PITTCat. You will be able to tell from the PITTCat results which, if any, Pitt library holds this journal and whether or not it is available electronically.

• If the journal is not held at any Pitt library, the PITTCat screen will state, “PITTCat found no records that matched your search”.

• NOTE: If HSLS subscribes to an electronic journal through the Ovid platform, the notation, full text, will appear with the article record. Use this link to open the full-text article. (See figure #1)

4. PubMed A PubMed search identified this same article.

• The article record does not have a “full-text icon”.

• There is another path to take while you are still in PubMed.

• Place the cursor on the word, “links” and click (see figure #2.) Then choose “link-out”. If the “link-out” option does not appear, this journal does not have a full-text version.

• In the list under “aggregators” and/or “publishers/providers” (in “link-out”) you will see the links to “full-text online”.

• The BIOMARKERS article will open from the links on this page.

• CAVEAT: For many articles in PubMed the links will not lead to a full-text article. If the full-text link does not allow access to the article, this indicates that no Pitt library subscribes to the electronic version.

• NOTE: If HSLS subscribes to an electronic journal there will be a full-text “icon” in the PubMed record. A click on this will bring you to the article. (See figure #2)

Remote Access

• Not all electronic resources are available via Remote Access

• It is possible to identify the journal titles not available remotely by opening the E-Journals list from the HSLS Web site.

• Lack of remote access for a specific journal will be indicated in red type next to the title: No Remote Access.

5. Changes Occur

• The electronic collection is not static.

• Titles are both added and dropped, occasionally due to factors beyond our control.
