WHEREAS: Glady's and her family moved to West Newton in the early 1960's with her cousin George Armstrong where Glady's worked at the Security Mills Warehouse for five years and later, after her family moved to Cambridge, at the Fenway Hotel as a Housekeeper Supervisor until 1973; and

WHEREAS: Glady's passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her children Donald Ray and Debra Kay Copeland; her brother Will Fletcher; her foster sister Effie Reid; her grandchildren Isha and Corey Gatlin, Donald Copeland and Antoine Copeland-Montout; her sisters-in-law Madaline Perry Fletcher and Glady's Fletcher; her aunt Lillie Zachary; her daughter-in-law Deborah Copeland; her son-in-law Ribert Montout; her nine nieces; and her five nephews; and

WHEREAS: Glady's will be sorely missed by all she touched and loved; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: For nearly half a century, Dr. Dorothy Irene Height has given leadership to the struggle for equality and human rights for all people. Her life exemplifies her passionate commitment for a just society and her vision of a better world; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height was born in Richmond, Virginia, March 24, 1912, and educated in the public schools in Rankin, Pennsylvania; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height established herself early in life as a dedicated student with exceptional oratorical skills; and

WHEREAS: With a $1,000 scholarship for winning a national oratorical contest and a record of scholastic excellence, she enrolled in New York University and earned the bachelor and master’s degrees in four years, and has received over twenty-four honorary degrees from various institutions worldwide: and

WHEREAS: Employed in many capacities by both government and social service associations, she is known primarily by her leadership role with the YWCA, and the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW); and

WHEREAS: While working as a caseworker for the New York Welfare Department, she was the first Black named to deal with the Harlem riots of 1935 and became one of the young leaders of the National Youth Movement of the New Deal era; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height’s career as a civil rights advocate began to unfold as she worked to prevent lynching, desegregate the armed forces, reform the criminal justice system and fought for free access to public accommodations; and

WHEREAS: On November 7, 1937, Dr. Height answered the call of Mary McLeod Bethune, President of the National Council of Negro Women, to join the quest for women’s rights, full and equal employment, pay equity and educational advancement; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height was elected national president of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority in 1947 and carried the sorority to a new level of organizational development throughout her term, which ended in 1956; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height quickly rose through the ranks of the YWCA, where she held several leadership positions and assumed responsibility for developing leadership training activities for volunteers and staff as well as programs to promote interracial and ecumenical education; and

WHEREAS: In 1956 she inaugurated and became Director of the Center for Racial Justice, a position she held until 1977 when she retired from the National YWCA of the USA; and

WHEREAS: From the Presidency of Delta Sigma Theta, Dr. Height assumed the presidency of the National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) in 1957 until February 2, 1998 when she became Chair and President Emerita; and

WHEREAS: As the fourth elected President of the NCNW, Dr. Height led a crusade for justice for Black women and worked to strengthen the Black family; and

WHEREAS: In the 1960’s Height placed the organization on an action course of issue-oriented politics, sponsoring “Wednesdays in Mississippi” when interracial groups of women would help out at Freedom Schools; voter education drives in the North and voter registration drives in the South, and establishing communication between black and white women; and

WHEREAS: As a promoter of positive black family life, Dr. Height conceived of and organized the Black Family Reunion Celebration in 1986 to reinforce the historic strengths and traditional values for the African American family. Now in its eleventh year in nine cities, the Black Family Reunion Celebration has made a difference in the lives of those fourteen million who have participated; and

WHEREAS: Under the leadership of Dr. Height, NCNW achieved tax exempt status; developed several model national and community based programs ranging from teenage parenting to eradicating hunger in rural areas; and established the Bethune Museum and Archives for Black Women, the first institution devoted to black women’s history; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height is known for her extensive international and developmental education, leading major leadership training assignments in Asia, Africa Europe and South Africa; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height served as a delegate to the UNESCO Conference on Women’s rights held in Kingston, Jamaica, in 1974; and in 1975 participated in the Tribunal at the International Women’s Year Conference of the United Nations at Mexico City; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height’s distinguished service and contribution to making the world more just and humane have earned her over fifty awards and honors from local, state, and national organizations and the federal government; and

WHEREAS: Working closely with Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Roy Wilkins, Whitney Young, A. Phillip Randolph and others, Dr. Height participated in virtually all major civil and human rights events in the 1960’s; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height received the Spingarn Medal from the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) IN July 1993, was inducted into the “National Women’s Hall of Fame” in October 1993, and was presented the Presidential Medal of Freedom Award in August 1994 by President Bill Clinton; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Height worked with the United States Conference of Mayors for nearly 15 years to recognize exemplary volunteer efforts undertaken by cities; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That as a result of her extraordinary leadership in advancing women’s rights, here dedication to the liberation of Black America and her selfless determination, Dr. Height has carried out the dream of her friend and mentor, Mary McLeod Bethune, to leave on one behind; and be it further

RESOLVED: That the City of Cambridge does hereby proclaim February 28, 2001 as

WHEREAS: Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School Swimming and Diving team became the first Cambridge all boys team to win the Greater Boston League title in swimming and in diving; and

WHEREAS: The team left the meet with seven champions, three season league records and 10 individuals who earned more than 15 league all-stars. Of the 47 swims, more than 40 were personal best times; and

WHEREAS: Cambridge set the tempo for the meet early, with an incredible swim by Artis Bergman in the 200 free to place third; and

WHEREAS: He was immediately followed by teammates Kurt Perry (fourth), Scott Doody (fifth), and Joe Trevethick (eighth); and

WHEREAS: David Koocher dominated the 200 IM with a third-place finish (a personal best), and Shuya Kyu, David Maybury Lewis and Colin Brauns all placed in the top 10. After two events, Cambridge occupied eight of the 20 positions available to nine teams; and

WHEREAS: Craig Etheridge’s was the only freshman all-star in the 50 free which is traditionally dominated by older, stronger seniors; and

WHEREAS: Jaunesse Jean’s diving performance made him the diving champion and earned the season high in the Greater Boston League; and

WHEREAS: Captain Robert Aguerro Hoffman’s sectional qualifying performance earned him an all-star in the event and a trip to the sectional meet; and

WHEREAS: Bladimir Ivanov and Gordan Walk were very instrumental in Cambridge Rindge and Latin High School winning the first separate diving title awarded in the Greater Boston League; and

WHEREAS: In the 100 Butterfly Artis Bergman placed third. In fifth place was Shuya Kyu and Chris Atchison in sixth place; and

WHEREAS: In the 500 relay, the team broke the previous fastest time of 1:43 down to 1:40 for the title; and

WHEREAS: Other swimmers who contributed to the Greater Boston League title were Robbie Fujiwara, Nick Metcalf, Slater Brauns, Lewis and Gabe Alessio; and

WHEREAS: With the season nearly over, the team prepares to send relays and divers to the state meet; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: In 1954, Guy came to America and settled in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: In 1959 Guy opened his own barber shop when hair cuts were only seventy-five cents; and

WHEREAS: Helen is a well-liked and dedicated employee of the City of Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: It has come to the attention of the City Council that the Guidance Center, Inc. will honor Dr. Charlotte Temin at its annual fundraising event, The Cambridge Pop's Swing Dance, on March 2, 2001; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Temin was born in New York City and began her career teaching in New York City public schools; and

WHEREAS: In 1972, while Dr. Temin was studying for her doctorate degree in counseling psychology at Harvard University, she was appointed Senior Psychologist at the Guidance Center, Inc. (GCI) and thus began what was to become a long-term propitious relationship with GCI; and

WHEREAS: One of Dr. Temin's first projects at GCI was the development of the Companion Tutor Program, which matches college students with children seen at the agency for behavioral and/or emotional issues; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Temin designed the program to be mutually beneficial: college students gained experience working with children and the children gained tutoring and mentoring from enthusiastic and energetic college students; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Temin based her doctoral thesis on the Companion Tutor Program, which is now in its 29th year as a very successful program; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Temin remained at the Guidance Center as senior psychologist until 1982, and then returned as a member of the Board of Directors in 1992, served as President from 1992-1997 and continues to serve as an active board member; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Temin's distinguished professional life also includes her private clinical practice, which she began in 1979, and her position as a clinical instructor in psychology in the Psychiatry Department of the Harvard Medical School; and

WHEREAS: Throughout her career, in her work with the Guidance Center and in her many other successful endeavors, Dr. Temin has dedicated herself to the social and emotional health of children and families; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record congratulating Dr. Charlotte Temin on the occasion of her recognition by the Center for Guidance, Inc., and thanking her for her work on behalf of the children and families of Cambridge; and be it further

WHEREAS: Concetta’s passing will leave a void in the lives of all her surviving family, her children Lucille and Nancy Salvato, Alfred Salvato and his wife Christina, and Richard Salvato and his wife Bernadette; her grandchildren Linda Gould, Christine Callahan, Cynthia Brindamour, Denise Fleming, Lisa Cushing, Nancie Pelton, and Stephen, David and Alfred G. WHEREAS: James was born in 1912 in Texas and his family later moved to New York where he played in Keith's Boys Band; and

WHEREAS: James was the valedictorian of his high school and later attended New York City College; and

WHEREAS: James was President of the Boston Writers and Artist Union; and

WHEREAS: James taught shop at the Shady Hill School in Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: James was the head of the Department of Graphics Design at the Rhode Island School of Design; and

WHEREAS: At the age of 65, James taught printmaking at the Cape Cod Vocational Technical High School; and

WHEREAS: James's passing will leave a void in the lives of all his surviving family, his daughter Martha Tanner; his sons Joachim and Eric Pfeufer; and his sixteen grandchildren, fifteen great-grandchildren and one great great grandchild; and

WHEREAS: James will be sorely missed by all he touched and loved; now therefore be it
