Pastor’s Corner
Greetings in the name of our risen savior Jesus Christ!
In this newsletter is an article about the upcoming mission trip that is being offered to our Black Hills Area United Methodist Churches. You may read about the logistical information there. But in this article I would like to talk about the importance of periodic mission trips. The very first mission trip I went on was in response to hurricane Katrina during Christmas week of 2005. I went along with a few friends from Sioux Falls Seminary and took my entire family as well. It was not only an incredibly meaningful time to bond as a family, but it was also very spiritually formational. I then had the opportunity to go back again three months later over spring break with a larger group of seminary students. During those trips we had the opportunity to not only witness to our faith through service, but to engage homeowners and others in spiritual conversations that profoundly affected their faith journeys.
Then during our time as youth directors at First UMC in Sioux Falls, we led annual summer mission trips with our youth as well as some adult chaperones. After one of those trips, a particular parent told me that he never felt closer to God than when he was serving on a mission trip. I can concur with that feeling. This is why I would like to encourage you all to sign up for this mission trip to Southeast Texas. The time and labor we give during the week of Thanksgiving will not compare to the joy and fulfillment we will receive as participants in this experience. Since it’s Thanksgiving Break that week Families are encouraged to join us!
When I first arrived at Prairie View, I was told by several people that they do not ever remember this church offering a mission trip. So here is your chance! If you take the plunge and decide to sign up, I can assure you that it will be one of the most rewarding times of your life. Whenever we dedicate time to God (especially an entire week) through loving and serving our neighbors, we end up being the ones who are truly blessed (
So please contact me with any other questions you may have. I look forward to this journey with you!
Blessings,
Pastor Mark
Hurricane Harvey Mission Trip!

A mission trip to southeast Texas is being organized for our Black Hills area United Methodist Churches. The current plan is to leave Sunday afternoon November 19th and return Sunday Nov. 26th. We are preparing to take both a 14 passenger bus and a 15 passenger van if the number of participants require. The registration deadline will be Oct. 22nd, but the first 29 registrations will be guaranteed a spot on the trip. The cost of the trip will be $150 per person (including gas, food and lodging). Any leftover funds over and above the cost of the trip will be donated to the Texas Conference relief fund.
We have registered our team with the Texas Annual Conference, but the exact type and scope of work, along with the exact location will not be provided to us until a couple of weeks before the trip. However, we have been told that we will be staying at a United Methodist church in a community within about an hour of Houston. We only need to bring open hearts to serve in whatever capacity they need us at that time.
The scheduling of this trip during the week of Thanksgiving is actually intentional. Many people have Thursday and Friday off during that week, so the hope is that folks would have to take less days off work. Also, what better way to show our Thanksgiving to God than to use that week to love our neighbors and help them in their hour of need? Please pray about it!
For more information or to register for the trip, please contact Mark Johnsen at 605-440-3201 or pastormarkjohnsen@
