Summative Assessment

Assignment: Create a connection between the text, music, and lens that includes the following:

1. The Basics:

□ Give your project a title (not “Othello” or “Macbeth” because someone already used that one!)

□ You may include visuals if you desire (drawn, computer generated, etc.)

2. The Songs:

□ Determine which lens you think is most relevant to either Othello or Macbeth and focus your analysis through the lens you have selected.

□ Find and list 3 songs that connect to Othello or Macbeth in some capacity. **Song titles go in quotation marks**

□ Next to each song title, write a paragraph (five-sentence minimum) explaining how each song connects to the literature. ** See sample entry. This serves as an example of the analysis that is required from you.

□ You must include a statement of which lens (cultural, feminist, or Marxist) from which you are viewing this text along with an explanation of why you selected that lens.

Grading: Your work will be assessed by how accurately and specifically you draw connections between the songs that you choose, the lens you selected, and the play itself. To do that successfully, you must do the following:

2. In your paragraphs, include specific quotes from the tragedies, all cited correctly.

*In other words, writing “To be or not to be,” will not suffice. Rather, make clear reference to the lines in the play and the themes we have discussed and explain how this reflects that character’s behavior and the universal themes that we have discussed, along with how the view through the lens develops this theme.

3. Use correct grammar, capitalization, and punctuation, and follow the general rules of academic writing.

4. Write in the literary present tense.

Plagiarism is the act of using another person’s ideas and expressions in your writing without acknowledging the source. “Another One Bites the Dust” – Queen **SAMPLE ENTRY**

After fighting valiantly against Grendel, Beowulf must battle his victim’s relentless mother. Despite the

nation’s great fear, Beowulf confidently pursues his enemy. As he competes with her in combat, he

“Longed only for fame, leaped back/Into battle. He tossed his sword aside,/Angry; … If weapons were

useless he’d use/His hands, the strength in his fingers. … He raised/His arms and seized her by the

shoulder; anger/Doubled his strength, he threw her to the floor” (lns. 503-507, 509-511). Queen’s song

“Another One Bites the Dust” discusses the sheer confidence evident in Beowulf’s actions. The song

acknowledges, “There are plenty of ways you can hurt a man/And bring him to the ground/You can beat him You can cheat him/You can treat him bad and leave him/When he's down/But I'm ready, yes I'm ready for you /I'm standing on my own two feet” (lns. 12-19). These lyrics indicate pride and fearlessness, both components of Beowulf’s character and qualities valued in Anglo-Saxon life. Although Beowulf faces death and harm in forms like Grendel, Grendel’s mother, and, 50 years later, the dragon in his own kingdom, he relies only on himself, his courage, and his strength to persevere. The poem shows that even his men leave him, as Wiglaf remains his only loyal friend. This idea is seen clearly when the text is viewed through the cultural lens by someone who understands the Anglo-Saxon culture. This culture was focused entirely on survival and in applying the elements of character that could help the society succeed: loyalty, bravery, strength, and honor. Beowulf’s confidence in his abilities reflects these cultural elements.
