Scope and Content Notes

This collection, donated by LCDR Denny in 1978, consists of miscellaneous personal souvenirs and papers of LCDR Denny. It is arranged in three sections. The first section consists of Navy related materials, including World War II era artifacts. Of interest in this section are photographs of WAVES, Rationing Books, and an issue of Sounding Off, the newspaper of NRMS in Northampton, Mass., dated 2 May 1944. The second section consists of information relating to the legal aspects of selective service and several newspaper clippings about women lawyers. The third section, in oversized materials, contains newspaper articles covering Admiral Nimitz's victory parade in 1945.

The artifacts in the collection are held by the Curator’s Branch. They include:

Biography

Mrs. Denny was born in Washington, D.C. on June 20, 1912 to Ernest and Marguerite Salisbury. She graduated from the Washington College of Law in 1932. She spent her working life in service to the government. Her first job was under the Federal Civil Service, in 1930, as a mimeograph operator with the George Washington Bicentennial Commission. Her final position was as Administrative Assistant to General Lewis B. Hershey, who was Advisor to the President on Manpower Mobilization. She retired from the Veterans Administration in 1973 and the Naval Reserve also in 1973, having entered active duty in 1944. She attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander. Mrs. Denny was married to John Denny. She died in 2006.
