Unit 6, Lesson 3

|Teacher: Bradshaw |Week of: 1/22– 1/25 |Grade(s): 1&2 |

Overview

In this lesson, students will be adding the black outline to their contour portraits. We will then begin to discuss Black History Month and

the Gees Bend Quilters.

Then, they:

Begin to make their “quilts” inspired by Gees Bend.

Unit Key Points

Observational drawing means drawing with our eyes.

A contour line drawing is a drawing of the outline of our subject. Kind of like a coloring book page.

When making a contour line drawing we want to look more at our subject than the paper.

Colors can show different moods. If we want to communicate a feeling to the person looking at our artwork, color can help us do that.

TW review expectations with students on the floor space using whole brain learning (chant + actions).

Why: This will give students the opportunity to review and internalize the art room expectations.

2. Teach: List what strategies/skills you will use and what the students will do (Explicit Instruction Model)

INM (15 min): TW demonstrate how to go over sharpie lines with black oil pastel to make the contour drawings stand out.

TW introduce the quilters of Gees Bend and briefly describe out next project

GP (0 min): n/a

IP (20 min): SW work on going over their contour lines while watching the documentary on the Gees Bend Quilters.

4. Assessment: List what assessments you will use including homework, formative assessments, quizzes, tests

The lesson will be informally assessed through the completed contour portrait

5. Differentiation: List strategies that can be used to engage all learners

Differentiation will come throughout the lesson. Students will be watching and describing what they see. They will be working hands-on with

materials.

In order to help students who are struggling TW:

ask student to repeat the instruction back to her individually

work with student 1 on 1 to demonstrate and get them started on the contour lines.

GT students will be challenged to add more details to their picture while still following the guidelines. TW provide examples/worksheets as

needed.

6. Connections: Explain any connections to different content areas
