Topic of the lesson: African American Inventors

Topic of the lesson: Five African American inventors

Background:

People are quick to assume that only White Males invented objects in our past. Because of segregation and our Nations historic reputation of African Americans, we do not realize today that there are several important African Americans who shaped our lives today. There are so many important items that were invented with the help of African Americans. In the lesson we will talk about the stop light which was invented by Garrett A. Morgan, the wrench invented by Jack Johnson and also other entertainment items such as the super soaker water gun invented by Lonnie Johnson. These items are not necessarily essential to our lives but it is still interesting to discover these 5 inventors who created theses items. There are often important African Americans who are left out of our history books. It is important to remind our next generation of these people.

Concepts to be taught:

• I want the children to understand who the following five African American inventors are: George Crum, Alfred L. Cralle, Lonnie Johnson, Jack Johnson, and Garret A. Morgan.

• I want the children to understand that each one of these inventors created items that are used daily in our lives.

• I want the children to learn that George Crum invented potato chips, Lonnie Johnson invented the super soaker, Alfred L. Cralle invented the ice cream scooper, Jack Johnson invented the wrench, and Garrett A. Morgan invented the stop light.

• I want the children to learn that not only White Males invented objects in the past.

• I want the children to see African Americans as inventors and role models.

• I want the children to understand that African Americans may have been left out of our history books and we need to recognize them.

Rationale:

Hundreds of humans have been successful in our past by inventing objects. It is important that we realize all races have contributed to this success. It is our job to acknowledge that not only white males are inventors. There are several African Americans who are apart of creating objects. Our classrooms include students with different diversity and different races. It is important to stay culturally relevant and recognize all sorts of African American figures whether they are inventors, scientists, doctors, or etc. One of the 16 tenets of Culturally Relevant Pedagogy states “Teachers with culturally relevant practices are careful to demonstrate a connectedness with each of their students” (Ladson-Billings.2009.pg 72) What If All the Kids Were White states, “Teach, explore, and show examples of different races; talk about it openly, help them gain accurate information.” (Derman-Sparks; Ramsey.2011.pg 132) It is our job to inform our students about the backgrounds and success of African Americans.

Materials needed:

-Power point slide of all inventors

-Website article on Jack Johnson

-What Color Is Our World book by Kareem Abdul Jabar

-Inspiring Black Inventors by Jeff C. Young

-Inventors coloring pages

-Inventions coloring pages

-Crayons/markers/coloring pencils

-Scissors

-Glue

Procedure:

1. Pull up power point slide for entire lesson background

2. Introduce the books, What Color Is Our World, and Inspiring Black Inventors

3. Discuss the five African American inventors George Crum, Lonnie Johnson, Jack Johnson, Garrett A. Morgan, Alfred L. Cralle

4. Explain what they all invented (use printouts or power point slide)

5. Read sections of the book about the inventors I am introducing

6. George Crum Pg 18 What Color is My World, ask “How many people here love potato chips?”

7. Alfred Cralle pg 29, What Color is My World, ask “How many people here eat ice cream and own a scooper at home?”

8. Garret Morgan pg 82, Inspiring African American Inventors, ask, “How important do you think these new stop lights were?” “What would the roads be like today if we did not have them?”

9. Lonnie Johnson pg 111, Inspiring African American Inventors, ask “How many people here play outside and have used the super soaker water gun?”

10. Jack Johnson (2nd paragraph from ) Ask, “Do any of you own wrench’s at home?”

11. Ask the students overall if they use these items everyday, if they own any or have experienced any of these items

12. Explain that without these 5 African American men then we would never have these items to use.

13. Explain that although these items are not essential to living each day that there are still so many other African Americans that have made huge impacts to our lives.

14. “Now I am going to pass out two sheets for you to color. The first one has 5 inventions on it. The second sheet has the 5 inventors. After you color the inventors cut them out individually and glue them next to what they invented on the other sheet. Discuss it with the classmates around you to figure out who invented what.

15. Pass out the inventors coloring sheet to the students in groups

16. Have each student cut out their own 5 inventors (5 small squares)

17. Pass out the inventions coloring sheet to each student (5 pictures of the inventions on one paper)

18. Have students color all of the inventions (also inventors if they want)

19. Have students glue the inventor picture onto the inventions paper so it correctly matches with who invented what

20. Students will discuss it with their classmates to figure out who invented what to correctly match it on the work sheet

21. Conclude with going over the final worksheet to make sure each students paper is correct and matched up with the correct inventor (show example of one already finished)

22. Explain that they can find more African American inventors in these books that I have brought such as Howard Latimer, George Carver Washington, and Madam C.J Walker

Jack Johnson Bio Article

Johnson was extremely confident about his capabilities, and defeated everyone he faced with ease. He also bucked many of the social "rules" of the day and openly dated White women. This eventually got him into trouble in 1912 when he was arrested for violation of the Mann Act, a law often used to prevent Black men from traveling with white women. He was charged with taking his White girlfriend, Lucille Cameron, across state lines across state lines for "immoral purposes." Although he and Lucille married later in the year, he was convicted of the crime by Judge Kenesaw Mountain Landis (who would later become the Commissioner of Major League Baseball) and was sentenced to Federal prison for one year. Before he could be imprisoned, he and Lucille fled to Europe.

Johnson eventually returned to the United States and was sent to Leavenworth Federal Prison in Kansas. While in prison, Johnson found need for a tool which would help tighten of loosening fastening devices. He therefore crafted a tool and eventually patented it on April 18, 1922, calling it a wrench.

Color then glue the correct inventor to match his invention!
