Introduction

Welcome to Student Guide to Blackboard, WebAdvisor, and Email!

What's in this manual?

This manual will show you how to access your online course materials. In addition, it will introduce you to other important aspects of online learning such as taking online tests. It will also introduce you to WebAdvisor, the online tool that you use to register for classes. We'll show you how to use this tool in these pages. Southwestern provides every student an official school email account. Typically, your instructor will contact you at your student email address. And this is how the school's business office will contact you if they need to send you any important notices. We'll introduce you to your official email account and more!

IMPORTANT NOTE: This document contains links to other resources on the Internet. Copying links (URLs) from a PDF document and pasting them into a web browser's search field sometimes results in a "Page Cannot Be Found" error. It is imperative that you have anti-virus software installed on your computer. The wide spectrum of viruses on the Internet poses a serious threat to home computer systems. Viruses can contaminate your computer through such means as infected email attachments and documents downloaded from the Internet. The three cardinal rules of Internet security are:

1. Install anti-virus software on your computer and update it regularly with the

latest anti-virus files. See your software manual or contact your anti-virus software company for directions.

2. Make sure that your anti-virus software is configured to check all incoming

email. Even then, never open an attachment unless you are expecting it.

3. Check all documents for viruses before opening them. See your software

manual or contact your anti-virus software company for information on how to run virus checks on individual files.
