MEDIA RELEASE
May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month
Bladder cancer is the 5th most common cancer in Canada, yet is relatively unknown to the public. Bladder Cancer Canada (BCC) is launching a campaign to promote awareness of #BladderCancer this May and is calling on Canadians touched by bladder cancer to share how #YellowHelps
TORONTO (APRIL 15, 2018) – The month of May is Bladder Cancer Awareness Month in Canada. The national organizing body, Bladder Cancer Canada, aims to shine a bright spotlight on this common but poorly understood cancer, affecting about 80,000 Canadians.
Bladder cancer is the 5th most common cancer in Canada – 4th for men and 12th for women. Almost 9,000 Canadians will be newly diagnosed with bladder cancer this year alone.
More shocking is that bladder cancer is the most expensive cancer to treat on a per patient basis because of a 60-70% recurrence rate. Yet, at 19th out of the 24 most common cancers, research funding into this disease lags behind almost all other cancers.
It is Bladder Cancer Canada’s goal to reach out and support each and every bladder cancer patient and their support network. That is why this year’s campaign is focussed on reaching these patients and showing the country how Bladder Cancer Canada helps. Canadians are encouraged to spread this message by using the hashtag #YellowHelps followed by a story of how, what, or who has been helped by Bladder Cancer Canada.
“Awareness about Bladder Cancer Canada and how we can help is not nearly as high as we would like,” states Tammy Northam, BCC Executive Director. “It is our goal this year to reach as many people as possible who’ve been affected by this disease. The more people know, the more people we can support.”
Canadians are invited to visit to find out how to get involved. Bladder Cancer Canada can also be found on Facebook, Instagram and on Twitter @BladderCancerCA. Let’s get the conversation going right across Canada about how #YellowHelps the fight against #BladderCancer.
