Abstract:

First Trimester Bleeding:

First trimester bleeding is a common chief complaint for many primary care visits. It is important to quickly and accurately evaluate the cause of bleeding, as consequences range from benign to lethal. This presentation uses interactive case-based learning with evidenced-based algorithms for first trimester bleeding, pregnancy of unknown location and guidelines on ultrasound findings to determine pregnancy viability. Using these simple to follow algorithms, participants will understand basic management concepts in early pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy, and normal pregnancy progression. Participants will also evaluate multiple ultrasound images to help to identify normal pregnancy processes as well as concerning pathology. Participants will leave this educational session with confidence in diagnosis and management of patients with first trimester bleeding.

Objectives: Participants in this session will be able to:

1) Use evidenced based algorithms and guidelines in evaluating patients with first trimester bleeding

2) Understand basic management concepts in early pregnancy loss, ectopic pregnancy and normal pregnancy progression

3) Evaluate ultrasound findings for a variety of causes of first trimester bleeding.
