FCI Schuylkill Staff Member Speaks to University Students
On December 5, 2012, FCI Schuykill Reentry Affairs Coordinator Suzanne Mitchell was invited to speak to 50 students in an Administration of Justice class at Penn State University's Schuykill Haven campus. In November, Ms. Mitchell spoke to 195 students at Bloomsburg University's Social Work program. Ms. Mitchell spoke about the Bureau's reentry initiatives, the role of Reentry Affairs Coordinators, the importance of volunteers, and social work in the field of corrections.
This year, the Service Leadership Class was able to assist the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, Aggieland Pregnancy Outreach, Milam Elementary School, and Still Creek Ranch (a home for displaced children). With over 300 skeins of donated yarn and 1,000 hours of volunteer labor, inmates made backpacks, diaper bags, hats and scarves, booties, beanies, footballs, bears, dolls, and lambs. In conjunction with the service project, a Scholastic Book fair was held at the institution and class participants donated more than $500 worth of books to the organizations.
FCI Terminal Island Holds Inmate Health Fair
On December 6, 2012, FCI Terminal Island held its annual inmate health fair. Education and Health Services department staff provided information on the importance of reading food nutrition labels, making healthy food choices, and using proper serving sizes. Pharmacy staff discussed Over-The-Counter medication and Psychology staff spoke about mental wellness. A variety of health information was made available to inmates; they were also provided an opportunity to receive the flu vaccine, and blood pressure and blood sugar level screenings.

FCC Butner
In 2010, FPC Bryan UNICOR Factory Manager Jenita Rayford developed a Service Leadership course that offers an opportunity for training, growth, and development for inmates employed by UNICOR. The course is designed to assist with reentry efforts and stresses leadership, self-motivation, and service. Due to the tremendous response to the program, it is now offered to the entire inmate population. Inmate participants from previous classes now assist with instruction and help to communicate the rewarding benefits of participating in this project.

with assistance from Unit Secretary Brenda Vicars and Financial Specialist Ashley Moles.
FCI Cumberland
During the holiday season, FCI Cumberland staff collected care packages for clients of the Willow Creek Adult Care Center. The center provides support services for anyone 16 years of age or older who has difficulty with two of more activities of daily living, such as cooking, bathing, and dressing, and is taking medication. The center's mission is to assist people in maintaining or improving their quality of life, helping them remain in the community, and avoiding premature institutionalization. The majority of the clients live at or below the poverty level.
This is the fourth year that FCI Cumberland has provided holiday care packages. The packages contain basic hygiene items such as tissues, hand cream, soap, deodorant, toothbrushes and toothpaste, shampoo, and lip balm. They also included puzzle books, air fresheners, and packaged food items such as oatmeal, hot chocolate, crackers, cookies, candy, and fresh fruit.
Angel Tree donations
FCI Oxford
During the holidays, FCI Oxford staff participated in an "Angel Tree" program sponsored by the Salvation Army to benefit economically disadvantaged children in Adams and Marquette Counties. When the "Angel Tree" program began in 1987, it served 45 children; today, more than 450 children in Adams County alone received gifts. A survey of participating families showed that for 60 percent of them the "Angel Tree" program was the only source of holiday presents for the children. FCI Oxford staff donated gifts, clothing, blankets, and toys for 60 children in the community.
