Weiv | Interactive Visuals

Weiv 1.5 User's Guide

Thank you for using Weiv interactive visual software! We're excited to share with you the easiest to use, most intuitive interactive performance software in the world – powerful enough for professional VJs and production techs, simple enough for youth groups.

Weiv at a Glance:

Weiv software is comprised of two parts, the Weiv Engine, and Weiv Scenes. The Weiv Engine is the platform for managing Weiv Scenes and Bluetooth Wii Remote Plus controllers. You can think of it as a gaming console, without a box. Weiv Scenes are like configurable motion graphics, or interactive pieces of video art that are loaded and run by the Weiv Engine.

Weiv Scenes can be selected and configured in the Weiv Chooser, which acts as the Weiv Engine's master control panel. Weiv Scenes can be used simply as background animations, or as interactive visual music, allowing up to seven “players” to interact with a scene at one time.

Weiv is most often used as a visual complement to live music performance, but can also be used with recorded music, or for environmental projection – painting a room with projected light to change the atmosphere.

Installing Weiv:

First download the “Weiv 1.5.pkg” from weiv.co. Double click on the icon and you'll see the following screen:

As it states, the installer will copy two programs, along with additional support documents to your computer. The Weiv software will be copied to your Applications folder; the Syphon plug-in for Quartz will be copied to your Library/Graphics folder, Candelair will be added to you System Preferences panel.

- First, read and agree to the End User Licensing Agreement (EULA).

- Second, choose which hard drive you'd like Weiv to be installed.

- Third, choose whether you'd like Quartz Composer Support and Candelair to be installed (strongly recommended for proper operation of Weiv).

- Finally, continue to the Weiv installation.

- After Weiv installs, you will see the following screen, instructing you to complete the

Candelair installation. Additionally, your System Preferences folder will indicate that the Candelair installation requires your attention.

- Complete the Candelair installation as instructed.

Once Weiv and Candelair are installed you will find that a Weiv folder has been added to your Applications folder. Select the Weiv (or Weiv Demo) icon to open Weiv.

Weiv Chooser: Front Panel and Controls:

Once the Weiv application is loaded you will see the Weiv Chooser, which consists of the following components.

1. Scene Library – The Scene Library lists all Weiv Scenes available. Click on a scene name in the library and the scene will appear in the Confidence Monitor and the Viewer. When a new scene is selected the screen will fade to black in the second screen viewer, then fade into the new scene (the fade will not occur in the Confidence Monitor).

Note: Whenever Weiv scenes are selected they are freshly loaded, beginning their animation anew. This means, when a scene is selected, it will not pick up exactly where you left it, as though it had been streaming in the background; the scene will start from the beginning of its animation sequence every time it is selected.

2. Preset List – Every Weiv Scene has five preset slots that can be saved and selected. Moving the mouse over the snapshot icon and pressing the left mouse button for 3 seconds saves a preset. Presets can be selected by single-clicking the desired snapshot.

3. Confidence Monitor – The Confidence Monitor displays the selected Weiv scene animation, even when the second Viewer screen is muted. When Weiv is started, the Confidence Monitor will appear black until a scene is selected.

4. Mute button – The mute button fades the second screen to black. Pressing the mute button when the second screen is black fades in Weiv window.

5. Scene Configuration – Each Weiv Scene has configurable parameters, including color, time, and a variety of filters. The combination of configuration settings can be saved as presets.

6. Settings Panel - The Settings Panel reveals the connection status of all Wiimotes, battery strength, as well as each Wiimote's associated role. The Settings Panel also contains all display resolution options.

7. Viewer Button – This button launches the Weiv Viewer, a full screen (or second screen) instance of Weiv.

8. Viewer Resolution – This display indicates the resolution of the Weiv Viewer. Resolution can be changed when the Settings Panel is opened. Scenes can also be set to single, double, or triple-wide configuration in this menu.

Using the Chooser:

Changing Colors:

Many Weiv Scenes will allow you to change hue, saturation, and brightness on the fly. By clicking or sliding the slider bar you can choose a hue on the spectrum, then use the color picker to select the desired brightness and saturation of the chosen hue.

Slider Controls:

Slider controls, such as play speed, control a value from 0% to 100%. Grab the slider knob with the mouse cursor and drag it to the desired value, or click anywhere along the slider to jump to a new setting.

Using the Viewer:

The Viewer is the full screen instance of a Weiv Scene, typically used to fill a second monitor or projection screen. To select the Viewer, click on the “monitor” icon at the top-right of the Chooser. If a second monitor is connected the Viewer should appear on the second screen, otherwise it will fill the background on your single screen.

The Viewer dimensions can be selected via the drop-down list that is revealed inside of the Settings Panel. Select your desired dimensions, as well as whether you are running in a single, double, or triple-wide configuration.

Managing Wiimotes with the Settings Panel:

[pic]

Discovery Button:

The Discovery Button allows Wiimotes to be detected. The Discovery Button is on by default, but can be turned off after all Wiimotes are connected. This is especially useful if you are running multiple instances of Weiv at once; allowing a user to connect Wiimotes to their computer, then by turning Discovery off, another set of Wiimotes can be connected to a second computer running Weiv.

Viewer Resolution:

This pull down menu allows you to choose the output resolution of the Weiv Viewer window.

Screen Width:

This button cycles between single screen, double wide screen, and triple wide screen settings.

Scene Preset Reset Button:

This button resets Weiv Scene Presets to their factory default configuration. This means any saved presets for the currently selected scene will be overwritten; a dialog box will ask if you want confirm your decision to overwrite all presets.

Connecting Wiimotes:

To connect Wiimote to Weiv press the '1' and '2' buttons on the Wiimote at exactly the same time. The Wiimote lights will blink, then stay solidly illuminated as the Wiimote icon appears in the Settings Panel.

Wiimote Roles:

Wiimotes are listed vertically in the order they are connected to Weiv. For each Weiv scene, the number of remotes and each Wiimote's role for the current scene are displayed. When a Wiimote performs its role, the role icon will momentarily show an orange border as the action is performed.

Wiimote Battery:

Below each Wiimote icon is a battery bar icon that contains 10 cells. Each cell represents 10% of the battery's capacity. When the battery is mostly full the cells are green; when it is partially drained the cells are yellow; and when the battery is very low the cells turn red.

Additional Features:

Using the Wii Remote System Mode:

A new feature has been added in Weiv 1.5 that allows the user to change scenes in the library, as well as control the mute button, from the first Wiimote. Simply hold the “home” button on the first connected Wiimote until the 4th LED on the Wiimote illuminates. When the 4th LED illuminates, continue holding “home” and press the up and down buttons on the directional pad to traverse the Scene Library. As you press the up and down buttons there will not be a visual indicator that anything has changed, but when the “home” button is released after pressing up or down, the newly selected scene will be loaded. If the up and down buttons are not touched while in home mode, the current scene will continue to play without reloading.

Additionally, while in system mode, pressing the “1” button on the Wiimote while holding “home” will fade the Viewer screen to black (engaging the mute button). Pressing “2” while holding “home” in system mode will disengage mute, fading the scene back into view on the Viewer screen.

Using the Weiv-Quartz Gateway:

You may recall that when the Weiv demo was installed a file named “Syphon Client QC.qtz” was installed to your Library/Graphics folder. To access Syphon Client QC.qtz open the “Extras” folder in your Applications/Weiv folder and choose “Select Quartz background for Weiv.”

The following dialog box will appear, guiding you to Syphon Client QC.qtz.

Copy the Syphon Quartz Client into your presentation software's “backgrounds” bin. Then simply choose the Syphon Quartz Client in your presentation software's “background” or “media” bin and run Weiv; the Weiv visuals will appear as a new media layer in your presentation or VJ software.

Additional Notes and Credits:

Important Notes:

Please use your Weiv software safely and responsibly. Always fasten the wrist strap on your Wiimote plus controller. Failure to do so could result in injury. Please don’t hurt yourself or others.

Minimum Requirements:

This Software is intended for use on Macintosh computers running OSX Snow Leopard or newer. The computer hardware should have at least 2 gigabytes of RAM, 2ghz processor and be Bluetooth enabled; the faster, the better. Therefore, we highly suggest a Macbook, Macbook Pro, iMac, or Mac Pro made in 2009 or newer. We have found that Nintendo Wiimotes stay connected better than generic or off-brand remotes, therefore we suggest using official Nintendo Wiimotes.
