Inspiring Wo-Men and the Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce cordially invite you to the 1st European Forum on Best Practices in Gender Equality which follows the attribution of the 2012 "Top Company for Gender Equality" Award to Bank of New York Mellon Luxembourg - in recognition of the great results demonstrated by BNYM Luxembourg in the recruitment, retention and advancement of a balanced percentage between men and women at all levels of its hierarchy.

The Forum is part of the initiative "Inspiring Woman of the Year & Top Company for Gender Equality" Awards placed under the patronage of Viviane Reding, Vice-President of the European Commission and of Xavier Bettel, Deputy - Mayor of the City of Luxembourg.

At this first edition of the Forum, CEOs, managing directors, gender and HR managers from leading companies will engage in discussions to share their perspectives and insights on issues and proven solutions for the recruitment, retention, and advancement of women at all levels. The loss of female talent with significant experience represents a significant loss in innovation potential for companies. Mid-level women have distinct needs, and companies are learning that addressing those needs with specific programs result in higher retention. Join the panel to understand the root causes of this trend and how they are implementing innovative initiatives to retain top talent.

Workshop 3: Sponsorship v. Mentoring

(atelier en français)

Workshop Description: Sponsorship has been identified by recent research as the “last hurdle” for women’s advancement. While women are as equally likely as men to report having mentors, they are significantly less likely than men to report having sponsors. A sponsor is someone who advocates for a woman’s career, opens new doors and opportunities for her, and connects her to influential others. While sponsorship clearly has significant and lasting benefits, many argue that unlike a mentoring relationship, sponsorship has to be “earned” and cannot be institutionalized. In this session, leading companies will present how they are scaling the opportunities for women to obtain sponsorship within their company, and with what results.

Moderator: Christine Statucki, BETAVI sàrl, member Inspiring Wo-Men Business Club

Panellists: Rachel Gaessler, Manager Business Mentoring, Luxembourg Chamber of Commerce, Aniela Bettel, Founder and first president of the Personnel Officers’ Group Luxembourg (POG), Barbara Daroca, Head of Marketing & Direct Channels, Founding president of RING, ING’s internal network, ING Luxembourg.

(workshop in English)

Workshop Description: Women in science, technology and research are pursuing a variety of careers – programming, individual contributor roles in engineering, IT, program management, technical sales, leadership, and many others. How do these career paths differ between organizations? Are women more likely to pursue certain paths over others? What are the issues for women in different realms of technical work, and how are companies designing interventions accordingly?

Moderator: Saskia Van Uffelen, managing director Bull Benelux, member Inspiring Wo-Men Business Club.

Panellists: Dr. Gudrun Ziegler, "2012 Inspiring Woman of the Year" in Science, technology and research, Danielle Moens, Partner, Centre for Balanced Leadership (Belgium), Bruno Chavolet, Consultant group psychodynamics, motivation of work teams, consultation and coaching, Chevalier de l’Ordre du Mérite, Luxemburg, 2012

Workshop 5: Best Practices in Advancing Women in Finance

(atelier en français)

Workshop Description: Despite ongoing efforts to increase the representation of women in financial leadership positions, statistics show that women are significantly less likely than their male counterparts to attain senior positions. How do companies identify, develop, and promote women who show the promise of a leader? Workshop 6: Best Practices in Creating and Sustaining Cultural Change

(workshop in English)

Workshop Description: Organizational change to create cultures that foster gender diversity is the most difficult issue faced by companies who strive to reap the benefits from gender diversity on innovation. This workshop addresses the issue of breaking down barriers to change towards the greater recruitment, retention, and advancement of women. Companies will discuss such topics as how their organization sustains its gains around diversity, showcasing the process through which this change happened, how they approach igniting change towards improving their culture for technical women, the lessons learned in driving change forward, and strategies to keep increasing the representation of women and the vision for continuing the momentum.

Moderator: Yvonne White, Deputy Head of Mission at the British Embassy and HR expert, member Inspiring Wo-Men Business Club

(workshop in English)

Workshop Description: Measurement and goal setting has been shown to be critical to a company’s ability to increase its representation of women, especially in fields typically masculine, such as finance, or science, technology and research. However, many companies are reluctant to have “targets” for fear that they will be interpreted as a “quota”. How are successful companies leveraging targets, goals, or quotas to drive change inside their organization? What have been the positive and unintended consequences for their company?
