Mission Fulfillment Monitoring Report

Nursing and Pre-Nursing

Brief Description

The Pierce College Nursing Program has a reputation for delivering skilled, competent nurses who not only do well in school, but are also highly thought of in our community. Outcome measures, which include graduation rates, job placement rates and NCLEX-RN pass rates, reinforce the Nursing Program’s reputation. This month’s report evaluates the enrollment and success metrics for nursing, as well as pre-nursing.

How This Reflects Mission, Core Themes or the Board’s Annual Goals

Nursing and pre-nursing data are related to our Core Themes of Access and Student Learning and Success, specifically the Equitable Enrollment and Educational Momentum objectives.

Background Information and Analysis

Nursing enrollment has been stable over the past few years, as it is a competitive program. Additionally, capacity has increased because of alternative entry through LPN-bridge. Nursing data reflect equity goals—over the past five years, we have seen headcount for students of color increase in pre-nursing, and now a slightly higher percentage of pre-nursing students are students of color. Nursing mirrors this trend and the program is now at near parity for enrollment of students of color relative to white students. Pass rates for the NCLEX nursing exam, as well as subsequent employment rates, remain high.

Potential Questions

1. What has led to the nature of the changing enrollment patterns?

2. How does nursing fit in with the college’s larger Equity, Diversity, and Inclusion goals?
