The Oxford English Dictionary, Encyclopedia of World History and Charles Darwin’s Origin of Species

These three books would allow future society to be rebuilt on their principles, allowing the

people to begin again with the best ideology civilization has developed thus far. In a world

where all books must be burned, author Ray Bradbury uses skillful manipulation of the

senses to make the scenario for this essay believable. One can’t help but to hurriedly

select these important titles to preserve for future generations.

Use transitional "words" such as manipulation and senses which move the

reader to the first paragraph of the body of the essay. (See more transition

words on the back side of this sheet.)

The Oxford English Dictionary, by Oxford University Press is the most comprehensive and detailed account of the history of English vocabulary ever. Its process of continual editorial revision provides a voyage of linguistic discovery that never seems to come to an end.

The English language has become a very expansive collection of words. Over the course of its history, words have been added and removed, based on people's needs to express their ideas and communicate what they see around them. Adding to the complexity is the fact that the language contains words that come from many different roots. So many words exist to convey thoughts that a dictionary is necessary to keep a record of them all. The dictionary must be saved in order to preserve the intricacies of language. Author Samuel Johnson once said that “Language is only an instrument of science, and words are but the signs of ideas.” (Oxford Press 12) Without language, human expression would be impossible; therefore it is crucial that the The Oxford English Dictionary be the first of three books that must be safeguarded for people of the future.

P3 - Body

The Encyclopedia of World History needs to be saved because of its exceedingly important theme of humanity’s capacity for evil and his/her destructive tendencies as seen in many military excursions throughout time. The Encyclopedia contains more than 20,000 entries covering prehistory through the year 2007. Examples of the currency of this work are the coverage on the 2004 presidential election and the September 11th terrorist attacks. Coverage of Western European history, Africa, South Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East is all contained in this massive volume of historical events. In addition, disclosure of women's history, social and cultural history, technology, and international government is also present. Content is divided into broad time periods, from "Prehistoric" to "Contemporary." Each section starts off with a global survey. Appropriately placed throughout the text are 57 black-and-white maps and 66 genealogy tables of monarchies… ______________________________________________

Of the great scientific theories throughout time, few have been more significant and controversial than those of Charles Darwin. In his book, The Origin of Species, Darwin lays

out a method by which all living things may change and evolve. His model, which was unlike any other at the time, showed how a particular animal could adapt to its environment through random mutations. In his writing, he argues that only those best suited to their surroundings survive, and thus reproduce, passing those traits to their offspring. Eventually, these are the only traits present in a particular population, and those traits that did not benefit the species are non-existent. ________________________________________________________________

I would choose this work to memorize and "become" as I feel it is the model that best explains how things came to be, and I am very interested in the scientific workings of evolution. ______
